Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (English Legal System) 75 marks: Section A five compulsory questions (four short answer plus one extended) worth 25 marks; Section B two essays from three, each with (a) 10 and (b) 15 marks 75 · 25% A Level 1 h 30 min
Paper 2 (Criminal Law) 60 marks: Section A one scenario question in three parts, 30 marks; Section B one question from two, a short answer plus an essay, 30 marks 60 · 50% AS / 25% A Level 1 h 30 min
Paper 3 (Law of Contract, A Level) 75 marks: Section A one scenario question from two, 25 marks; Section B two essays from three, 25 marks each 75 · 25% A Level 1 h 30 min
Paper 4 (Law of Tort, A Level) 75 marks: Section A one scenario question from two, 25 marks; Section B two essays from three, 25 marks each 75 · 25% A Level 1 h 30 min

Paper 1 technique: 75 marks in 1 h 30 min. Spend about 30 minutes on the five Section A questions – short answers need precision (definition, effect, example) and the extended answer needs analysis and evaluation. Allow about 28 minutes for each Section B essay: describe the law and its basis in part (a), then argue both sides and conclude in part (b). Always show the working in calculations: a proportion is part / whole x 100, a limitation date is the start year plus the period, and a success rate is appeals allowed / appeals received x 100.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (English Legal System) five compulsory questions first, then two essays Short answers give a conclusion with no definition or effect; the extended part describes instead of analysing and evaluating
Paper 2 (Criminal Law) use the source material to list the issues first Starting a scenario answer without listing the issues first, and confusing which authority is the legal basis
Paper 3 (Law of Contract, A Level) list the elements, then apply the facts Calculations give the number without the working (proportion, limitation period, appeal rate), losing method marks
Paper 4 (Law of Tort, A Level) establish liability before calculating damages Essays cite cases without analysis and never name the limits of the principle or reform proposals

What is each A-Level Law 9084 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (English Legal System): five compulsory questions first, then two essays; Paper 2 (Criminal Law): use the source material to list the issues first; Paper 3 (Law of Contract, A Level): list the elements, then apply the facts; Paper 4 (Law of Tort, A Level): establish liability before calculating damages

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Split AS and A Level across the 12 weeks: AS candidates drill Paper 1 (English legal system) and Paper 2 (criminal law) by topic for eight weeks and only then time whole papers. A Level candidates add Paper 3 (contract) and Paper 4 (tort) in weeks 5-8, two scenarios and one essay each per week, then rotate all four papers under time in weeks 9-12. Calculations (proportion, limitation) must be automatic by week 6.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (English Legal System) 1 h 30 min about 30 min on Section A
Paper 2 (Criminal Law) 1 h 30 min 30 min on Section A, 40 min on Section B
Paper 3 (Law of Contract, A Level) 1 h 30 min about 25 min on the scenario
Paper 4 (Law of Tort, A Level) 1 h 30 min about 25 min on the scenario

How should the time be split inside each A-Level Law 9084 paper?

Paper 1 (English Legal System): about 30 min on Section A; Paper 2 (Criminal Law): 30 min on Section A, 40 min on Section B; Paper 3 (Law of Contract, A Level): about 25 min on the scenario; Paper 4 (Law of Tort, A Level): about 25 min on the scenario

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Obiter treated as binding Saying obiter dicta bind lower courts Only the ratio binds obiter is persuasive only
Standards of proof reversed Saying civil cases need proof beyond reasonable doubt Civil is the balance of probabilities; criminal is beyond reasonable doubt criminal: beyond reasonable doubt
Wrong denominator in the proportion Calculating 10 / 2 for the jury threshold The denominator is all 12 jurors 83.3%
Limitation without a start date Writing 2021 + 3 as 2021 Time runs from breach or discovery proceedings by 2024
Extended answer as a list Only defining precedent in question 5 An extended answer needs analysis and evaluation at least one evaluation paragraph
07

The error log and the mark scheme

The log records authority, not just answers: issues (how many the facts raise), authority (statute or case and the principle), application (how the facts satisfy the elements), conclusion. Calculations get their own line: proportion = part/everything x 100, limitation = start year + period. Three repeats in a cell means reread the chapter, not another question.

08

How many years should you drill?

The 9084 topic list is revised every three years (currently 2026-2028), so drill by topic against the current syllabus and then use recent whole papers by year. There is no need to reach back before a syllabus change: those topics no longer match the current list and only blur it.

How many years of past papers is enough?

The 9084 topic list is revised every three years (currently 2026-2028), so drill by topic against the current syllabus and then use recent whole papers by year. There is no need to reach back before a syllabus change: those topics no longer match the current list and only blur it.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Law 9084 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Law 9084 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Should an AS candidate drill Papers 3 and 4?
No. AS is Paper 1 and Paper 2 only (50% each). Carrying on to the A Level adds Paper 3 (contract) and Paper 4 (tort) at 25% each, for the following year.

Do essays require memorised case names?
Relevant law and cases must support the argument, especially in part (b); marks follow whether the principle is used correctly and evaluated, not how many cases are named.
