How this paper was built
This is a TutorZone original drilling mock: the questions follow the Cambridge 0475 structure (Paper 2 Drama, 1 h 30 min, 50 marks, two set texts at 25 marks each) and are not Cambridge past papers or marking references.
No play text is reproduced here; the set texts are named by title and author only, and the answers are model answer frameworks and marking focus written by TutorZone.
Pacing
| Section | Marks | Suggested time | What to do first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Drama) | 50% | 40 min a question, last 10 min checking evidence | stagecraft, audience effect, whole-text evidence |
| Paper 3 plus Paper 4 (Drama Open Text and Unseen) | 25% + 25% | spend about 20 min reading and planning the unseen | on-the-spot analysis and critical commentary |
May I answer both questions on the same play?
Direct answer: No. Paper 2 requires two different set texts, with one passage-based and one essay question.
Paper 2: passage-based question (25 marks)
The real paper offers two questions per text, passage-based or essay; this paper demonstrates one.
Question 1 (25 marks)
Question A (passage-based, 25 marks): answer on one of the 2027 drama set texts (for example William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Using the passage printed on the paper, how does the dramatist use language and stagecraft to make the audience feel that confusion will be resolved?
Paper 2: essay question on a different text (25 marks)
It must be a different text, and the essay needs whole-text evidence.
Question 1 (25 marks)
Question B (essay, 25 marks): answer on a DIFFERENT one of the 2027 drama set texts (for example Shelagh Delaney, A Taste of Honey). How does the dramatist use one character’s conflicts with others to present the play’s criticism of society?
(In the real paper you answer two questions on two different texts, one passage-based and one essay question.)
How is a drama question different?
Direct answer: you write about what the audience experiences: stagecraft such as lighting, entrances and exits, position on stage and the pace of dialogue counts as evidence, not just the words.
Answer framework
Question 1
Model answer framework: state your line in one sentence – which techniques create which effect. Then three analytical paragraphs, each starting from a quotation in the printed passage: language (contrast, repetition, inversion), stagecraft (entrances and exits, mistaken identity, where characters stand), and pace (short exchanges quicken, lyrical lines slow the scene), always linking to what the AUDIENCE feels. Comment on form: the shift between verse and prose can mark order against confusion. Add your own response, naming the moment that changed your reading of the passage. Conclude on the word ‘resolved’. In a drama question you are writing about an audience’s experience, not only a reader’s understanding.
Answer framework
Question 1
Model answer framework: define the conflict – who with whom, over what. Then argue in three layers: conflict within the family, conflict of class or money, and conflict of gender or generation, each supported by evidence from across the whole play (scenes, dialogue, stage directions) rather than one scene only. Be specific about the social criticism: which institution or attitude is being exposed? Deal with the other side by asking whether any character offers an alternative. Conclude on how the conflict presents the criticism, not merely that conflict exists. A clear line of argument with whole-text evidence scores; retelling the plot does not.
Which plays are set for 2027?
Direct answer: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Antony and Cleopatra by Shakespeare, A Taste of Honey, Blues for an Alabama Sky and Princess & the Hustler – check the syllabus for your examination year, as the list changes.
Where these marks are usually lost
| Mistake | What it looks like | What it costs | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both questions on one text | Two answers on the same play | Breaks the paper’s rule | Use two different texts |
| Reader’s view only | Ignoring stagecraft | Drama marks lost | Lighting, entrances, stage position |
| Retelling the plot | Narrating the play | Low analysis marks | One technique per paragraph with quotation |
| No opposing case | One side only | Thin argument | Add the counter-argument and answer it |
