Primary 4 Maths: Adding and Subtracting Fractions | 10 Advanced Items

Ten items work on different denominators and mixed numbers: common denominators, borrowing from a whole, three-step chains, plus water in a jug and book thickness.

Borrow from the whole Advanced items handle whole numbers and fractions together. When subtracting a mixed number from a whole, borrow one and rename it first; in chains, work left to right or clear the brackets, and show which order you use.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 The answer is 29/24, that is 1 5/24. The common denominator is 24: 20/24 plus 9/24 gives 29/24.
2 The answer is 4/12, which simplifies to 1/3. Rename 1/4 as 3/12, then 7 − 3 = 4.
3 The answer is 3 5/6. Add the whole numbers to get 3, then 2/6 plus 3/6 gives 5/6.
4 The answer is 2 1/8. Write 3 3/4 as 3 6/8, then subtract to get 2 1/8.
5 The answer is 23/18, that is 1 5/18. The common denominator is 18: 8/18 plus 15/18 gives 23/18.
6 The answer is 2 4/7. Write 5 as 4 7/7, then subtract 2 3/7 to get 2 4/7.
7 The answer is 16/30, which simplifies to 8/15. The common denominator is 30: 21/30 minus 5/30 gives 16/30.
8 The answer is 12/12, that is 1. The common denominator is 12: 9/12 plus 10/12 minus 7/12 gives 12/12.
9 The answer is 2 7/8 L. 2 1/2 minus 3/4 gives 1 3/4, then add 1 1/8 to get 2 7/8.
10 The answer is 15/8 cm, that is 1 7/8 cm. Same denominator: 3 + 5 + 7 = 15, written as 1 7/8 cm.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
