P4 Maths: Long Multiplication and Division (10 Correction Items)

Ten common slips: wrong place value, a remainder larger than the divisor, dropped zeros, estimation treated as the answer, a missing remainder and wrong area units.

Focus First locate the faulty step, then write the correct working and check it with the inverse operation.

  1. Error redoCorrect the work: in 43 × 25 the second row was written as 86 and the answer given as 301. Find the error and the correct product.
  2. Error redoCorrect the work: 946 ÷ 23 was answered as quotient 40, remainder 26. Find the correct quotient and remainder.
  3. Error redoCorrect the work: 120 × 30 was answered as 360. Find the correct answer.
  4. Error redoCorrect the work: 7,200 ÷ 90 was answered as 8. Find the correct answer.
  5. Error redoCorrect the work: 39 × 21 was estimated as 800 and 800 was given as the answer. Find the exact product and the difference.
  6. Error redoCorrect the work: a number divided by 36 gives quotient 27 and remainder 11, and 972 was given as the number. Find the correct value.
  7. Error redoCorrect the work: 25 × 12 × 8 was worked left to right as 25 × 12 = 300 then × 8. Give an easier order and the answer.
  8. Error redoCorrect the work: in 1,824 ÷ 24 a trial quotient of 74 gave 1,776 and work stopped. Find the correct answer.
  9. Error redoCorrect the work: a box holds 24 pencils and 38 boxes were bought, answered as 62 pencils. Find the correct total.
  10. Error redoCorrect the work: a rectangle is 128 cm by 36 cm and the area was given as 4,608 cm. Give the correct area and unit.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 The second row is 43 × 2 tens, so it should read 860; 43 × 25 = 215 + 860 = 1,075. The tens row must shift one place left, otherwise the product is ten times too small.
2 The remainder 26 is not smaller than 23, so one more quotient is needed: 946 ÷ 23 = 41 remainder 3. Check 23 × 41 + 3 = 946; the remainder must be smaller than the divisor.
3 120 × 3 = 360 and both zeros must be restored, so 120 × 30 = 3,600. Work out 12 × 3 = 36, then restore both zeros that were dropped.
4 720 ÷ 9 = 80, so 7,200 ÷ 90 = 80. Remove one zero from both numbers: 720 ÷ 9 leaves the quotient unchanged.
5 Estimate 800, exact 819, difference 19. Estimation only checks the size of the answer; the exact value must still be worked out.
6 Dividend = 36 × 27 + 11 = 972 + 11 = 983. The remainder must be added back; 36 × 27 covers only the divisible part.
7 Multiply 25 × 8 = 200 first, then 200 × 12 = 2,400. Pairs such as 25 × 4 or 25 × 8 give a round hundred and save one hard multiplication.
8 24 × 76 = 1,824, so 1,824 ÷ 24 = 76; 74 falls short by 48. Check with the inverse operation; if the shortfall is at least the divisor, the quotient must go up.
9 24 × 38 = 960 − 48 = 912 pencils. Items per box times number of boxes is a multiplication, not an addition.
10 128 × 36 = 4,608, and the unit is cm² rather than cm. Area is two-dimensional, so the unit must be squared; cm alone measures length.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
