Primary Chinese | Timed classical paper practice (for tutors) | fifteen questions in eighteen minutes

Primary Chinese | Timed classical paper practice (for tutors) | fifteen questions in eighteen minutes

  • 2026-11-04

Students read fine without a clock and then run out of time, leaving the last two questions blank. This lesson splits the clock: six minutes a passage, 1.2 minutes a question, then review the errors.

Objectives — Students can: (1) split 18 minutes into 3 blocks of 6 minutes; (2) finish 5 questions per block, 1.2 minutes each; (3) stop on time and return to circled questions in order; (4) use 6 minutes to classify each error as marking, verb or moral.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Three-step marking Which three kinds of character mark a sentence break? Saying verb, final particle, name
Dialogue and tone What happens at every saying verb? New line, label the speaker
Genre clues What are the three fable clues? Invented, twist, stated lesson

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-4 min Rules first Stop when time is up, no going back Students repeat the rule
4-8 min Script 1: split the clock 3 blocks of 6 minutes Three times in the margin
8-12 min Script 2: take easy marks 1.2 minutes a question, skip if stuck Circle skipped questions
12-16 min Script 3: demo one passage Tutor works it against the clock Students watch the order
16-34 min Three passages 3 passages x 6 minutes 18 minutes, 15 questions
34-40 min Error review Name the error type for each Types written in the margin
40-45 min Exit check Three oral questions Redo one question on the spot

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Split the clock: three blocks, three bells

Write the 18 minutes as three blocks of 6 minutes and move on at each bell, even with a passage unfinished, because the marks are counted per question, not per passage.
Say the rule once and have students repeat it; the timer does not start until they can.

Students do: write the three checkpoints in the margin and tick each one.

Scene 2: Take the easy marks first

Cap each question at 1.2 minutes and circle anything skipped, returning only after the passage is done. In a classical paper, time is the expensive part, not difficulty; one stuck question costs three later ones.
Order of attack: marking first (fastest), translation second, moral last.

Reminder: return to a circled question once; if it still blocks, leave it and protect the rest.

Scene 3: Error review: three types, no copying

Errors go into three types only: marking, verb, moral. Students write one character beside the number, never copy the whole question; copying teaches nothing.
The type with the most errors becomes the focus of the next homework set, chosen by type.

Students say: which type was your error? No answer means no review.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Marking Add slashes to an unpunctuated sentence Find the saying verb and final particles Slash count must match
Translation Turn one line into modern Chinese Circle the verb first Never drop the subject
Moral Write the lesson in one sentence Tie it to character and ending No proverbs
Timed set Three passages, fifteen questions Circle and return Stop at the bell
Sanity check (teach this): Arithmetic: 3 passages x 6 minutes = 18 minutes for 15 questions, so 1.2 minutes per question. Demo 12 minutes, opening 4 minutes and exit 5 minutes leave 6 minutes for error review. 1.2 minutes per question is tight for P5-P6, which is why the routine must be trained until it is automatic.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Run the timed set Checkpoints written in the margin Did anyone run over
Circle and return Circles must be distinct Did anyone camp on one question
Classify errors Marking, verb, moral No copying

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Camping on one question Five minutes on one item “Skip, circle, come back.”
Writing past the bell Continuing after time “Stop. The marks are in the fifteen questions.”
Copying wrong answers Rewriting the whole question “One character is enough: mark, verb, moral.”
Starting with the hardest Opening with the moral question “Marking first, it is the fastest mark.”

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
How long is each passage block? 6 minutes, 18 in total Wrong answer means repeat the rule
What happens to a question you cannot do? Circle it and return after the passage Camping loses the drill
Which three error types? Marking, verb, moral Missing one means redo

09 Tutor FAQ

What if students cannot finish?

Cut the number of questions, never the time; a longer clock still fails in the exam.

Should every lesson be timed?

Yes, at least one full 18-minute run each lesson, or the rhythm never forms.

Must they redo the whole question?

No, only the failed step: marking error means remark that line only.
