Primary Chinese | Homophones and look-alike characters lesson plan (for tutors) | Two error families in 40 minutes

Primary Chinese | Homophones and look-alike characters lesson plan (for tutors) | Two error families in 40 minutes

  • 2026-11-04

A student writes the character for “eyeball” where “sunny” belongs, and the character for “at” where “again” belongs. Both errors come from listening only. This lesson gives three checks: radical, sound part, and word pairing.

Objectives — Students can: (1) separate any homophone or look-alike pair with three checks (radical for meaning, sound part for pronunciation, word pairing for the written form); (2) state the radical and meaning of the four characters built on the same sound part, and stop swapping them; (3) finish 12 pairs in 2.5 minutes each, 30 minutes in total, writing a reason for every choice; (4) catch the roughly 6 wrong characters that appear in a 300-word essay, one every 50 words, using their own correction list.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Radicals How do the characters for “sunny” and “eyeball” differ on the left? Sun radical versus eye radical
Sound parts Do “clear”, “please” and “feeling” share the right side? Yes, the same sound part, so they sound close
Word pairing How many words must a student know for one character? At least two, with different meanings

02 Lesson flow (40 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-5 min One wrong sentence Board a sentence using “at” where “again” belongs, ask what is wrong Students hear that the sound is identical
5-14 min Check one: radical Sunny versus eyeball, chair versus lean, radical meaning each time Every character needs its radical meaning
14-23 min Check two: sound part Four characters on one sound part, four different radicals Four characters, four meanings
23-32 min Check three: pairing Drop each candidate into fixed words such as “now” and “goodbye again” Pairing, not listening
32-38 min Timed drill 12 pairs at 2.5 minutes each A reason for every pair
38-40 min Exit check Three oral questions Two or more wrong: redo step two

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Stop listening, start pairing

When a student writes the “at” character inside “go again”, the ear reports no problem because the sound is right. The fix: drop each candidate into two fixed words, for example “now” and “goodbye again”. Only one pairing reads smoothly. Say it plainly: “Your ear cannot tell them apart; your word bank can.” Twenty seconds per pair is enough.

Candidate character into two fixed words; the one that reads smoothly wins

Scene 2: For look-alike characters, read the radical first

Students can read all four characters built on the same sound part and still write the wrong one, because they start from sound instead of meaning. Require the radical to be named out loud first: sun is weather, eye is sight, water is liquid, speech is talking. Four characters, four addresses; a wrong character is a letter sent to the wrong address.

Radical meaning first, sound part second; reversing the order guarantees errors

Scene 3: Build a correction list, never copy the wrong character ten times

Copying a wrong character ten times trains the wrong shape. Replace it: one correct character, one paired word, one sentence the student writes themselves. Three items, then the correction is finished. Three correct uses beat ten wrong copies every time.

Wrong character leads to one correct form plus one word plus one sentence

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Choose the character at versus again, do versus make, carry versus wear Pair, then read the whole sentence Never trust the sound
Correct the passage Circle and fix wrong characters in a paragraph Give a radical or pairing reason for each fix Re-read the sentence after fixing
Build words from one sound Two different characters for one sound One separate word for each character The two words must differ in meaning
Look-alike set Sunny, eyeball, clear, please Two boxes: radical and sound part All four must be separated
Sanity check (teach this): Check the arithmetic: 12 pairs times 2.5 minutes is 30 minutes, which is 75 percent of a 40-minute lesson, leaving 10 minutes for the opening and the exit check. Running one minute per pair would cover twelve pairs in twelve minutes and look efficient, but the students never pair a word themselves, so they only heard the teacher. Split each 2.5-minute pair into one minute on the radical, one minute of student pairing, and 0.5 minutes of checking.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Choose the right character in “I am doing my homework ___” (at / again). Again, as in “once more” Choosing “at” means redo
Choose the right character in “___ ball” (sunny / eyeball). Eyeball, eye radical Choosing sunny means name the radical
Give the radical meaning of the three characters for clear, please and feeling. Water / speech / heart Missing one means redo

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Choosing by sound Writing either character for “at” and “again” “You can read it a hundred times and still be wrong; pair it: now, goodbye again.”
Copying the wrong character A full page of the wrong form “Ten wrong copies train the error; one correct form plus one word fixes it.”
Fixing without explaining The fix is right, the reason is missing “If you cannot name the radical, it is not corrected yet.”
Mixing the look-alike pair Writing the eyeball character in “sunny day” “Sunny has the sun; the eye has the eye. Which one did you write?”

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Name the three checks. Radical, sound part, word pairing Missing one means redo
Which radical does the eyeball character carry? Eye Answering sun means redo step three
How long should each of the 12 pairs take? 2.5 minutes Two or more wrong: redo step four

09 Tutor FAQ

How many pairs should be memorised?

12 per lesson, twice a week; the checks matter more than the list.

What if the student pronounces words inaccurately?

Do not use pronunciation to decide; use pairing and radicals, which do not depend on the accent.

Does simplified writing change the answer?

Sometimes characters merge, so keep the drill in one script instead of mixing both.
