Primary Chinese | Listening Data Grid (for tutors) | People, times, places

Primary Chinese | Listening Data Grid (for tutors) | People, times, places

  • 2026-11-04

A pupil hears a school notice and then gets the time, the place and the person in charge all wrong. He listened to it as a story and had nowhere to put the facts. This lesson gives him three columns and one rule: hear it, drop it in.

Objectives — Pupils can: (1) name what each of the 3 columns holds; (2) write facts into the right column while the recording plays, without copying sentences; (3) explain why unfiled facts get lost; (4) complete the grid for 2 recordings independently in 18 minutes (40% of the lesson).

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Telling time How do you write “quarter past three” in figures? 3:15
Place names Are the hall and the playground the same place? No – copy the name you hear
Names and roles Is “the teacher” enough for the people column? Write surname plus role

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-6 min Hook: three questions, three misses Play a 40-second notice, then ask when, where, who Answer aloud; most miss one or two
6-10 min Act 1: draw the grid Draw three columns and state one fact type per column Draw their own grid
10-14 min Act 2: people column Model writing a surname plus role as soon as it is heard Fill three people
14-18 min Act 3: times and places Model filing “3:15” and “covered playground” Fill two times, two places
18-36 min Timed practice (18 min) 2 recordings x 9 minutes, play and fill Write while listening, no sentences
36-41 min Compare grids Hold two grids against the script; name the misfiled item Say which item they misfiled
41-45 min Exit check Three oral questions Replay one recording if they cannot answer

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: They remember only “there was an event”

Play a 40-second notice: “Friday at 3:15, all pupils assemble at the covered playground. Mr Chan will take the roll; Mr Lee from PE will lead the warm-up.” Then ask three questions: what time, where, who takes the roll.
Most pupils recall “Friday” and “an event” but miss the time and the place. Play it again, this time with a grid in front of them.
Close with: “You did not fail to hear it. You had nowhere to put it.”

Pupils restate: facts need a column to land in, or they scatter.

Scene 2: One column, one fact type

Draw three columns: people, time, place. Model each. “Mr Chan”, “Mr Lee” go into people, always surname plus role. “Friday”, “3:15” go into time. “Covered playground” goes into place, copied exactly.
Set one rule: several items per column are fine, but each item is two or three characters, not a copied clause.

Pupils restate: one column per fact type, two or three words per item.

Scene 3: Write while listening

Ask why they cannot wait until the end. Demonstrate: replay and try to recall afterwards. They recover two people, half a time and no place at all.
Working memory holds only a few items and a notice delivers them one after another. Writing moves each fact out of the head so the head is free for the next one.
So the rule is: hear it, write it, neatness optional.

Pupils restate: write as you hear; do not save it for later.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Fill people Listen to a notice and list everyone responsible Role plus surname into column one Mr Chan, Mr Lee
Fill times Catch the date and the clock time Date first, then digits Friday, 3:15
Fill places Catch the meeting point and the backup point Copy the name, no paraphrase Covered playground
Patch gaps Second hearing fills empty cells only Only fill blanks, do not rewrite One place added
Sanity check (teach this): Check the arithmetic: 3 columns x 4 minutes of modelling = 12 minutes; 18 minutes of practice (2 recordings x 9); that is 40% of the lesson; 6 + 12 + 18 + 5 + 4 = 45 minutes; one recording is a school notice and the other a trip briefing, so both carry all three fact types.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
People A library announcement: list every staff role mentioned Three or more, surname plus role
Times Same clip: opening and closing times Both written in digits
Places A trip notice: meeting and dismissal points Both names copied exactly

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Copying whole clauses People column reads “the roll was taken by Mr Chan” “Two words is enough. You are not a stenographer.”
All facts in one pile One block of text under the notice “One column per type. Mixed means lost.”
Surname without role People column says “Mr Chan” only “Write the role too, or which Mr Chan?”
Inventing a place name “Playground” for “covered playground” “Copy the name. Two missing words is a different place.”

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
What are the three columns? People, time, place Redraw if one is missing
How long is each entry? Two or three words Correct “a full sentence”
Why write while listening? Working memory drops items; writing keeps them Re-teach if they say “write at the end”

09 Tutor FAQ

Printed grid or hand-drawn?

Hand-drawn takes ten seconds and fixes the column names in memory; printed grids are fine later.

What if the recording plays once only?

Practise with two plays, the second filling blanks only; exams play once, so aim for seventy per cent on the first pass.

What if there are more than three items?

Add rows downwards, never squeeze sideways, or the columns blur at marking time.
