Primary English: Conditionals Mistake Review (10 Questions)

The fourth paper reviews the mistakes: ten items gather the traps from the first three papers, seven gap fills on the zero conditional, rains and will in the first conditional, were and would in the second, would have in the third, and unless, plus three corrections on will inside an if clause, was for were, and a missing have after would.

Quick answer Decide first which type the sentence is: a fact takes the zero conditional with the present tense on both sides; a real possibility takes the first with a present if clause and will in the main clause; an unreal present takes the second with a past if clause and would; an unreal past takes the third with had plus a participle in the if clause and would have plus a participle in the main clause. An if clause never takes will, and unless means if not.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 heat A zero conditional states a general fact and uses the present tense in both clauses.
2 rains In a first conditional the if clause takes the present tense, never will.
3 will Will belongs only in the main clause while the if clause stays present.
4 were A second conditional uses were even with the subject I.
5 would The main clause of a second conditional takes would plus the base verb.
6 would A third conditional main clause is would have plus a past participle.
7 unless Unless means if not and is followed straight by a clause.
8 If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the trip. The if clause takes the present tense and never will. An if clause never takes will.
9 If I were you, I would tell the truth. A second conditional if clause uses were even with I. A second conditional takes were with every subject.
10 If he had studied, he would have passed the test. After would comes have plus the past participle. A third conditional main clause needs would have plus a participle.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
