Primary English: Relative Clauses Challenge (10 Questions)
The third paper mixes everything: non-defining clauses between commas that never take that, why after the antecedent reason, which commenting on a whole statement, and three correction items on a repeated subject after who, who used for a thing, and that inside a non-defining clause.
Quick answer A non-defining clause is set off by a pair of commas, adds extra information only, and never takes that; reason takes the relative adverb why; a comment on the whole preceding statement uses which; a subject pronoun is never followed by a second subject; and a thing takes which or that, never who.

03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | who | A non-defining clause sits between commas and still takes who for a person. |
| 2 | which | A non-defining clause about a thing takes which and never that. |
| 3 | where | A place takes where or in which. |
| 4 | why | With the antecedent reason the relative adverb is why, equal to for which. |
| 5 | which | A non-defining clause about a thing takes which, not that. |
| 6 | which | A clause that comments on the whole previous statement takes which. |
| 7 | that | An object pronoun may be left out, and that is the form supplied when it is written in. |
| 8 | The man who called me is my teacher. The relative pronoun who is already the subject, so he must be removed. | A relative pronoun acting as subject is never followed by another subject. |
| 9 | This is the book which I borrowed from the library. The antecedent is a thing, so the pronoun is which or that, never who. | The choice between who and which depends on the antecedent. |
| 10 | My father, who works in a bank, leaves home early. A non-defining clause never takes that; use who for a person and keep the commas. | That is banned in a non-defining clause, and the commas stay. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
