Primary English: Relative Clauses Mistake Review (10 Questions)

The fourth paper reviews the mistakes: ten items gather the traps from the first three papers, seven gap fills on choosing who, that, when, whose, where, why and whom, plus three correction items on who used for a thing, that inside a non-defining clause, and a repeated object after the pronoun.

Quick answer Decide first whether the antecedent is a person (who) or a thing (which or that); then check the pronoun role in the clause: as subject it is followed straight by a verb, as object by a subject and verb; whose shows possession and takes a noun; a place takes where, a time when, and reason takes why; a non-defining clause sits between commas and never takes that; and no subject or object is repeated after the pronoun.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 who The antecedent is a person and the pronoun is the clause subject, so who is used.
2 that The antecedent is a thing and the pronoun is the object, so that or which works.
3 when A time antecedent takes the relative adverb when.
4 whose Possession is shown by whose, which is followed straight by the noun.
5 where A place antecedent takes the relative adverb where.
6 why With the antecedent reason the relative adverb is why.
7 whom A person as the object of the clause takes whom in formal writing.
8 The film which we watched was boring. The antecedent is a thing, so which or that is used and who is wrong. The choice between who and which follows the antecedent.
9 My cousin, who lives in Japan, speaks Cantonese. A non-defining clause never takes that, so who replaces it and the commas stay. That is banned in a non-defining clause and the commas stay.
10 The book which I read was exciting. The relative pronoun is already the object, so the extra it must go. An object pronoun is never repeated after the relative pronoun.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
