S4 Chemistry: The Periodic Table — Practice Paper 2 (10 Questions)

Paper 2 moves from position to properties: group trends, radius across a period, ion formation, isotopes and relative formula mass.

Quick answer Ten questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 03 cover group trends and the noble gases; 04 to 06 cover reading position from arrangement and forming ions; 07 to 09 cover radius, isotopes and formula mass; item 10 redoes the group-outer electron link.

  1. FoundationRank lithium, sodium and potassium by how vigorously they react with water.
  2. FoundationRank fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine by reactivity.
  3. FoundationWhat do the arrangements of helium, neon and argon share?
  4. FoundationPotassium is 2, 8, 8, 1. Which period is it in?
  5. IntermediateFor the element with atomic number 20, give the arrangement and position.
  6. IntermediateA magnesium atom (2, 8, 2) loses two electrons. What is the ion arrangement?
  7. IntermediateHow does atomic radius change across a period? Use sodium 186 pm, magnesium 160 pm and aluminium 143 pm.
  8. ChallengeHow many protons and neutrons do chlorine-35 and chlorine-37 hold?
  9. ChallengeWhat is the relative formula mass of NaCl? (Na 23, Cl 35.5)
  10. Error redoError drill: why does “group number equals outer electrons” fail?

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 Potassium > sodium > lithium. Metallic character rises down a group.
2 Fluorine > chlorine > bromine > iodine. Non-metallic character falls down the halogen group.
3 Full outer shells: helium 2, neon 2,8, argon 2,8,8. A full shell makes noble gases unreactive.
4 Period 4. The number of shells equals the period number.
5 2, 8, 8, 2; Period 4 Group II (calcium). Two outer electrons place it in Group II.
6 2, 8. Losing the two outer electrons leaves a neon-like core.
7 It falls: 186 > 160 > 143 pm. A larger nuclear charge pulls the same shells in tighter.
8 Both have 17 protons; 18 and 20 neutrons. Isotopes share protons but differ in neutrons.
9 58.5. Add the relative atomic masses of the atoms.
10 It holds for main groups only; iron 2, 8, 14, 2 is Group VIII. Transition metals show no fixed group-outer electron link.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
