DSE Chinese | Narrative Detail Lesson-Prep Guide (Tutor Edition) | A 600/240/60 Budget and One Detail Every 83 Characters
- 2026-11-03
Students write narratives like reports: the events finish and no person ever appears. This lesson uses a word budget to force the camera closer.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative elements | What are the six elements of a narrative | Time, place, people, cause, course, result |
| Percentages | What percentage is 600 of 900 | 66.7% |
| The senses | Name the five senses | Sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-6 min | Read the prompt | Find the key words and limits | One sentence of intent |
| 6-15 min | Plan three beats | Open, turn, close, one detail each | List three details |
| 15-53 min | Write 38 minutes | Skeleton first, then description | 23.7 characters a minute |
| 53-58 min | Check density | Detail spacing, tense, spelling | One detail every 83 characters |
| 58-60 min | Exit check | Three questions marked now | All three right |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Nine hundred characters is a budget, not a mood
Two thirds narration is right because it carries the story, but description below one fifth leaves characters as names and feelings with nothing to attach to.
The usual failure is nine tenths narration: students believe more events mean richness, so three paragraphs retell one event three ways.
Ask students: what a reader remembers from 900 characters with only 60 of description (the events, never the people).
Scene 2: Detail density can be counted
Three generators: one action, one sense, one object. Three sentences of that per paragraph and the writing turns concrete.
The detail must also point the same way as the feeling: the mother’s hands matter because she is putting food on the plate, not because observation is on display.
Ask students: which action could replace he was nervous (tapping the table, checking the watch).
Scene 3: Time is marks
So invert the process: spend 9 minutes fixing three details, then writing is only filling in, never composing.
The 5-minute check does three things only: add one detail, unify tense, fix spelling. Rewriting sentences waits until there is slack.
Ask students: how many thinking pauses fit into 38 minutes for 900 characters (none).
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompted narrative | A small event | Six elements plus a closing turn | 900 characters |
| Description | One scene | Senses plus action, three details | Three in 250 characters |
| Emotional arc | From fear to nerve | One turn per beat | Name each turn |
| Timed writing | Finish in 38 minutes | Skeleton first, never change topic | 23.7 characters a minute |
Percentages total 100; 66.7, 26.7 and 6.7 are rounded, so they read as 100.1.
More detail is not better: detail unrelated to the theme slows the pace, and three per paragraph is the ceiling.
Practice finishing without description first; description then adds marks rather than rescuing a thin draft.
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Characters of description in 900 | 240 characters | 900 times 26.7% |
| Writing rate for 900 in 38 minutes | 23.7 per minute | 900 divided by 38 |
| Spacing of three details in 250 characters | 83 characters | 250 divided by 3 |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Narrating everything | 850 of 900 characters are events | Keep two tenths of the words for the person, not the plot. |
| Adjectives instead of detail | Writing that it was lively | Lively is your conclusion; write what you saw and heard. |
| Detail fighting the mood | A grim description at a happy moment | Setting should run with the feeling unless the contrast is deliberate. |
| Remembering description last | Two scenic lines bolted onto the end | Description belongs inside paragraphs, not as a patch. |

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)
| Question | Answer | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Characters of description | 240 characters | All three right: move to argument |
| Characters per minute | 23.7 | One wrong: rerun the timed drill |
| Detail spacing | 83 characters | Two wrong: return to density |
09 Tutor FAQ
Can the whole piece be reflective?
No. A narrative needs events; reflection should stay under a tenth or it becomes an essay.
Must all five senses appear?
No. Two senses in a paragraph is enough; concreteness beats quantity.
Is a short piece penalised?
Yes, content and structure both suffer, so practise until output is stable.
