DSE English | Listening Note-Taking and Data Completion: Tutor Lesson Plan

DSE English | Listening Note-Taking and Data Completion: Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-11-04

Marks are lost to over-writing, wrong word class and missing units, not to poor hearing. This lesson turns listening into three habits: predict, record, check.

Objectives — Students can: (1) predict each gap from grammar and units before playback; (2) use three shorthand symbols inside a 75-second gap; (3) catch spelling, plural and unit errors before submitting.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Parts of speech Where nouns and verbs sit After an article comes a noun
Spelling Common -tion and -ment endings /shun/ is written -tion
Numbers Stress in thirteen and thirty Stress the second syllable in -teen

02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-8 min Diagnosis Four gapped sentences State the part of speech
8-22 min Predict Articles, units, plurals Write a guess per gap
22-36 min Record Three shorthand symbols Take notes at speed
36-48 min Check Spelling, plural, unit Fix two errors
48-56 min Drill Exam-style task Full run with timing
56-60 min Exit Three quick items Spoken answers

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Act 1: Predict before you hear a word

Every gap carries grammar: “a” or “an” takes a singular countable noun, “the” takes any noun, “to” takes a base verb, “more” takes an adjective. Students pencil N, V or Adj beside each gap before playback.
Students do: label the word class of all 10 gaps within 60 seconds.
Common slip: guessing meaning instead of word class, then forcing a wrong word in.

Tutor move: cover the gaps, show only the frame, ask what can fit grammatically.

Scene 2: Act 2: Three symbols only

Three symbols suffice: an up arrow, a down arrow, and a right arrow for causes. Add an ampersand for and. Never write a full sentence; keep each note to 1 to 3 words, or it is copying rather than note-taking.
Students do: note through one 75-second gap, then compare.
Common slip: writing sentences and missing the next two items.

Tutor move: call “pen down” the second the speaker moves on.

Scene 3: Act 3: The check that earns free marks

Three passes: spelling (-tion, -ment, doubled consonants), plurality (never plural after “a”), and units (dollars, percent, km, minutes). Read the whole sentence back each time.
Students do: self-mark against the three passes and repair two answers.
Payoff: the paper is 20 marks; data completion carries 10, and the same habit protects the other 10.

Tutor move: repair one wrong answer aloud so they hear the sentence fail.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Data completion Predict class, listen, write keyword, check unit One word per gap
Multiple choice Read options, underline differences, listen for contrast Eliminate distractors
Matching Number options, note first mention, confirm pairing No option reused
Short answer Find the question word, listen for the type, write in full Grammar must match
Sanity check (teach this): Every answer must pass three checks: word class, plurality, unit. The task has 10 gaps at 1 mark each out of a 20-mark paper, with about 2.5 minutes of audio across 2 plays. Reject any note longer than 3 words as an answer.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Gaps in the practice task 10 Count the lines
Marks from data completion 10 One mark per gap
Approximate listening time in minutes 2.5 Two plays of 75 seconds

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Copying phrases Four words in a one-word gap “How many words fit the gap?”
Ignoring plurals Writing book after two “Read it back – does it sound right?”
Missing units Writing 40 for 40 percent “Forty what?”
Guessing from the topic Filling before listening “Which word class fits here?”

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Word class after “an” Singular countable noun Wrong: reteach articles
Number of shorthand symbols Three Wrong: reteach the set
Three checks before submitting Spelling, plural, unit Wrong: reteach the checklist

09 Tutor FAQ

Should students write during the first play

Only symbols and numbers; full words belong to the second play.

How many words per note

1 to 3; more means copying.

Is accent training worthwhile

For number pairs such as thirteen and thirty it repays itself every year.
