S5 Maths: Circle Geometry Paper 2 (angles in the same segment, tangent properties and angle formulas)
This paper focuses on angles in the same segment and on tangent properties. Whenever a central angle appears, halve it for the angle at the circumference; whenever a tangent appears, mark the right angle with the radius. Only then apply the intersecting-chords and intersecting-secants formulas, and finish with converse questions. All angles are checked by computer.
Quick answer Same-segment angles both 35 degrees with a central angle of 70; the angle in a semicircle is 35; a tangent meets the radius at 90 so angle POA is 62; the exterior angle 115 equals the interior opposite angle; a central angle of 130 gives 65; 36 and 144; base angles of 66; the intersecting-chords angle is 80; the secant angle is 45; 55 at the circumference matches 110 at the centre, not 27.5.

03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 35 degrees. | Angles in the same segment are equal, so the other is also 35 degrees. |
| 2 | 35 degrees. | The angle at the circumference is half the central angle on the same arc: 70 divided by 2 gives 35. |
| 3 | 35 degrees. | The angle in a semicircle is 90, so 90 minus 55 gives 35. |
| 4 | 62 degrees. | The tangent is perpendicular to the radius, so angle OAP is 90 and 180 minus 90 minus 28 gives 62. |
| 5 | 115 degrees. | An exterior angle of a cyclic quadrilateral equals the interior opposite angle, a direct result of opposite angles summing to 180. |
| 6 | 36 and 144 degrees. | Opposite angles sum to 180, so with the smaller angle x, 5x gives 180, x is 36 and the other is 144. |
| 7 | 66 degrees. | Tangents from the same point are equal, so triangle PAB is isosceles and (180 minus 48) divided by 2 gives 66. |
| 8 | 80 degrees. | The angle between intersecting chords is half the sum of the intercepted arcs: (100 plus 60) divided by 2 gives 80. |
| 9 | 45 degrees. | The angle outside the circle is half the difference of the arcs: (140 minus 50) divided by 2 gives 45. |
| 10 | The relation is inverted: the central angle is twice the angle at the circumference, so it is 110 degrees. | Remember it by size: the angle at the centre is larger, so multiply by 2; the angle at the circumference is smaller, so halve. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
