S5 Maths: Circle Geometry Paper 3 (semicircles, equal chords, tangent lengths and converses)

This paper starts from the angle in a semicircle, adds equal chords with equal angles and equal tangent lengths, then tests converses such as a 90 degree angle implying a diameter. For ratio questions, first turn the arc fraction of the whole circle into an angle before multiplying. All angles are checked by computer.

Quick answer The angle in a semicircle is 52; equal chords give equal angles at the circumference; tangent lengths are equal; a 90 degree angle at the circumference implies a diameter; a central angle of 84 is 7 over 30 of the whole turn; a tangent-chord angle of 64 gives a central angle of 128; 3x and 2x give 108 and 72; the intersecting-chords angle is 110; the secant angle is 60; cyclic quadrilaterals need not be rectangles.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 52 degrees. The angle in a semicircle is 90, so 90 minus 38 gives 52.
2 They are equal. Equal chords cut off equal arcs, equal arcs subtend equal angles, so equal chords subtend equal angles.
3 7 cm. Tangents from the same external point are equal, so PB is 7 cm as well.
4 AB is a diameter. A chord subtending 90 degrees at the circumference must be a diameter, the converse of the semicircle theorem.
5 Seven thirtieths. 84 divided by 360 gives 84 over 360, which simplifies to 7 over 30.
6 128 degrees. The tangent-chord angle equals the angle in the alternate segment, 64, and the central angle is twice that, 128.
7 108 and 72 degrees. 3x plus 2x is 180, so x is 36 and the angles are 108 and 72.
8 110 degrees. The interior intersection angle is half the sum of the arcs: (150 plus 70) divided by 2 gives 110.
9 60 degrees. The exterior angle is half the difference of the arcs: (160 minus 40) divided by 2 gives 60.
10 The claim adds a condition that is not there: a cyclic quadrilateral only needs opposite angles summing to 180, and even a trapezium or a kite can be cyclic. A rectangle is only one special case; four right angles are not required.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
