DSE Maths | Vectors Lesson-Prep Guide (for tutors) | Addition, dot product, angles
- 2026-11-03
Students can compute components but panic at the word perpendicular. This lesson fixes three routines: magnitude from squares, perpendicular from a zero dot product, angle from the cosine formula.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Square roots | The square root of 3 squared plus 4 squared | 5 |
| Trigonometry | Is cos 120 degrees positive or negative | Negative (-0.5) |
| Coordinates | How to write the displacement between two points | End point minus start point |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-8 min | Diagnose | Three mental magnitude questions | Answer 5 and root 5 |
| 8-22 min | Add and scale | Component by component | Write a plus b |
| 22-36 min | Magnitude | Square, sum, root | Write (0.6, 0.8) |
| 36-48 min | Dot product | Value and zero test | Get -5 |
| 48-56 min | Angle | cos theta = -0.4472 | theta about 116.6 degrees |
| 56-60 min | Exit check | Three questions collected | Independent |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Act one: a vector is a pair of numbers, not a slanted line
Make them answer: addition and subtraction go component by component, never mixed.
Trap: treating the magnitude as 3 + 4 = 7.
Tutor move: write the wrong line on the board and make them find the fault.
Scene 2: Act two: magnitude and unit vectors
A unit vector is a divided by its magnitude, giving (0.6, 0.8) with length 1.
Make them answer: verify 0.6 squared plus 0.8 squared equals 1.
Tutor move: every unit vector must be length-checked before you accept it.
Scene 3: Act three: the dot product settles perpendicularity and angle
cos theta = -5 over (5 times 2.2361), so cos theta = -0.4472 and theta is about 116.6 degrees, an obtuse angle that matches the negative value.
A quick perpendicular vector: swap the components and change one sign, so (4, -3) from (3, 4); check 3 times 4 plus 4 times -3 = 0.
Trap: dropping a magnitude in the denominator, or assuming |a+b| = |a| + |b| (here |a+b| = 4.4721).
Tutor move: they must say “sign of the dot product, then the formula”, never straight to the calculator.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute | Addition and scaling | Work each component | Stay in component form |
| Magnitude | Length and unit vector | Square, sum, root, divide | Check the length is 1 |
| Perpendicular | Prove or find a perpendicular vector | Dot product equals zero | Swap and flip a sign |
| Angle | Angle between two vectors | cos theta formula | State acute or obtuse first |
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| a = (3,4), find |a| | 5 | Square, sum, root |
| b = (1,-2), find a dot b | -5 | Multiply and add |
| The unit vector of a | (0.6, 0.8) | Divide by |a| |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Adding lengths | Writing |a| = 3 + 4 = 7 | “A vector is a pair of numbers, not a slanted line.” |
| Lost sign | a dot b as 3 + 8 | “The minus belongs to the 2. You dropped it.” |
| Half denominator | Dividing by |a| only | “Both magnitudes go in the denominator.” |
| Wrong direction | b – a written as a – b | “End minus start. Say which one comes first.” |
07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)
- Vector addition and magnitude (in-house) — Questions 1-3: component work and unit vectors
- Dot product and angle (in-house) — Questions 4-6: perpendicular tests and angle calculation
08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)
| Question | Answer | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The magnitude of (3,4) | 5 | Wrong: reteach squares and roots |
| Condition for perpendicular vectors | The dot product is zero | Wrong: reteach a dot b = 0 |
| a dot b = -5, cos theta = -0.4472, the angle | 116.6 degrees | Wrong: reteach inverse cosine |
09 Tutor FAQ
Why |a+b| is not |a| + |b|
Direction matters; equality holds only when the vectors point the same way.
Why the dot product is a scalar
The cosine absorbs the direction, leaving a size.
Does three dimensions need a new formula
No, the same formula with one more component.
