HKDSE English | Paper 4 Group Discussion: Teacher Prep Guide | Turns, Linking, Individual Response

  • 2026-11-02

Four candidates share 8 minutes, so each gets about 120 seconds. At 30 seconds a turn that is 4 turns, not twenty. This lesson teaches students to spend those turns well.

Objectives — Students can: (1) plan 4 turns of about 30 seconds each, carrying one idea, one reason and one example; (2) link to the previous speaker with three set moves instead of restarting the topic; (3) deliver a 1-minute individual response with a position, a reason and one detail.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Full sentences Speaking in sentences, not single words I think this because
Linkers so, but, however in speech One linker per turn
Note-taking Jotting keywords while listening Two or three words

02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-10 min The arithmetic Explain four candidates and 8 minutes Student repeats it back
10-22 min Three linking moves Model agree, partly disagree, redirect One of each
22-34 min Practice run one Groups of four, tutor counts turns only At least 3 turns each
34-44 min Individual response 1 minute, three-part structure Position plus detail
44-54 min Practice run two One dominant speaker added One clean interruption
54-60 min Exit check Three quick questions All three correct

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: The arithmetic decides the strategy

4 candidates share 480 seconds, about 120 seconds each; at 30 seconds per turn that is 4 turns.
Plan before speaking: one idea, one reason, one example, then hand over with a question.
Rule: never spend two turns on the same point, because repetition earns nothing.

Ask the student: how many turns do you get, and what will each one do?

Scene 2: Link, do not restart

Three moves cover almost everything: agree and add, partly disagree, and redirect.
Each move has two halves: a reference to the last speaker, then your own content.
Without the reference the examiner hears four short talks rather than one discussion.

Ask the student: what is missing when you answer without mentioning the last speaker?

Scene 3: The individual response is a different task

After the discussion each candidate answers alone for 1 minute: a position, one reason, one detail.
Do not summarise the discussion; answer the question you are given.
End on a complete sentence even when time is called.

Ask the student: what are the three parts of a one-minute response?

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Interaction Opening a point Claim, reason, example 30 seconds
Interaction Responding Reference the last speaker, then add Two sentences
Interaction Managing turns Signal, short question, pause One clear signal
Monologue Individual response Position, reason, detail 1 minute
Sanity check (teach this): Check three things: every turn names the previous speaker or their idea; every turn carries one reason, not three; the individual response answers the question rather than summarising the group.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
A four-person discussion on a school policy Plan 4 turns each All four speak 4 times
Drill the three linking moves Two sentences each Reference plus content
One-minute individual responses Position, reason, detail Full sentences
Discussion with a dominant speaker Insert once politely One successful turn

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Packing three ideas into one turn Nothing is developed, low marks “One idea, one reason, then stop.”
Repeating what was just said No new content, wasted turn “Add something or hand over.”
Never referring to others Sounds like a monologue “Start with the last speaker.”
Summarising in the individual response Fails to answer the question “Answer the question you were given.”

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
How many turns does each candidate get? About 4 Not unlimited
Name the three linking moves Agree and add, partly disagree, redirect Each with a reference
What are the parts of the individual response? Position, reason, detail Not a summary

09 Tutor FAQ

Students freeze when someone dominates, what helps?

Rehearse one interrupt signal until it is automatic.

Should they memorise phrases?

Three moves are enough; the content must be their own.

How should practice runs be marked?

Count turns, count references, and time each turn.
