- 2026-10-16
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · CAMBRIDGE A-LEVEL ACCOUNTING 9706
Built on the Cambridge 9706 syllabus (2026-2028): AS is Paper 1 multiple choice (28%) plus Paper 2 fundamentals (72%); the A Level is 14/36/30/20%. Method only – drill order, the discipline of writing formulae and workings, a 12-week timetable, pacing and the error log.
How is A-Level Accounting 9706 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): 30 multiple-choice questions, 30 marks (22 financial accounting + 8 co (30 · 28% AS / 14% A Level); Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): four structured questions, 90 marks (Q1 30, Q2-Q3 15 each, Q4 30) (90 · 72% AS / 36% A Level); Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): three structured questions of 25 marks, 75 marks; source material is o (75 · 30% A Level)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 30 multiple-choice questions, 30 marks (22 financial accounting + 8 cost and management) | 30 · 28% AS / 14% A Level | 1 hour |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | four structured questions, 90 marks (Q1 30, Q2-Q3 15 each, Q4 30) | 90 · 72% AS / 36% A Level | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | three structured questions of 25 marks, 75 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 75 · 30% A Level | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | two structured questions of 25 marks, 50 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 50 · 20% A Level | 1 hour |
Paper 1 technique: 30 questions in 1 hour is about 2 minutes each. Learn the ratio formulae first – gross profit margin = gross profit / revenue x 100, mark-up = gross profit / cost of sales x 100, current ratio = current assets / current liabilities, the acid test after removing inventory, and inventory turnover = average inventory / cost of sales x 365. For depreciation remember that reducing balance works on the carrying amount, and always separate capital from revenue expenditure.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations | Confusing margin with mark-up (revenue versus cost of sales) and giving ratios without a percentage or decimal place |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | statements first, decisions last | Using original cost instead of net book value in reducing balance, and treating under- and over-absorption as the same |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | notes and statements first, evaluation last | Statements submitted without a balancing check: a trial balance that does not agree, a bank reconciliation missing unpresented cheques |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | calculations before recommendations | Decision questions stop at the number, with no recommendation and no non-financial limitations |
What is each A-Level Accounting 9706 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations; Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): statements first, decisions last; Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): notes and statements first, evaluation last; Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): calculations before recommendations
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Accounting moves multiple choice, then statements, then decisions: weeks 1-3 run ten Paper 1 questions a day (two minutes each, formula re-checked on every error); weeks 4-8 take statement questions topic by topic (depreciation, accruals, bad debts, inventory, partnerships, companies) with a balancing check every time; weeks 9-10 are cost and variance work; weeks 11-12 timed whole papers. Keep a personal formula sheet – only the ones you have actually got wrong.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 1 hour | about 2 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | 1 h 45 min | about 35 min on question 1 |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | 1 h 30 min | about 30 min per question |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | 1 hour | about 30 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Accounting 9706 paper?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): about 2 min per question; Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): about 35 min on question 1; Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): about 30 min per question; Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): about 30 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margin used as mark-up | Applying 25% directly as the mark-up | Mark-up = gross profit / cost of sales | 33.3% |
| Reducing balance on original cost | Charging 40,000 x 25% every year | Year 2 works on the carrying amount of 30,000 | 7,500 |
| Overstated inventory treated as harmless | Adjusting only the statement of financial position | Closing inventory enters cost of sales, so profit is overstated by 3,000 | profit overstated by 3,000 |
| Bonus issue treated as fundraising | Expecting cash from a bonus issue | A bonus issue moves retained earnings into share capital with no cash | retained earnings fall by 50,000 |
| Under-absorption read as over-absorption | Assuming higher actual overhead means over-absorption | Absorbed 112,500 is below actual 118,000 | under-absorbed by 5,500 |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: formula (numerator and denominator the right way round), arithmetic (decimal places, rounding direction), balance (was the check performed), recommendation (limitations stated). Half the marks lost in Accounting come from the middle two – working and checking habits, not concepts.
How many years should you drill?
The 9706 structure follows the 2026-2028 syllabus, with 30 multiple-choice questions in Paper 1. Confirm a session matches the current syllabus, then drill Paper 2 statement questions topic by topic (the most stable shape) and time the last three sessions of Paper 3 and Paper 4. Older papers are for question shapes only.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Accounting 9706 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Accounting 9706 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Is there a formula sheet for Paper 1?
No. Learn them: margin = gross profit/revenue x 100, mark-up = gross profit/cost of sales x 100, current ratio = current assets/current liabilities, quick ratio excludes inventory, inventory days = average inventory/cost of sales x 365.
When can I sit Paper 1?
Both AS and A Level candidates sit it in the exam series (the same paper, weighted 28% for AS and 14% for the A Level). Papers 3 and 4 belong to the A Level only.
