A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1: Pacing the Multiple-Choice Paper

A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1: Pacing the Multiple-Choice Paper

  • 2026-11-03

Biology: seconds and traps in the multiple-choice paper

The multiple-choice paper is not hard because of knowledge but because of time and wording: all four options often look right, and one qualifier decides it – always, only, rate, net. Marks come from circling the qualifier and from flagging and skipping anything uncertain instead of burning a whole block on one item.

How is A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): 40 four-choice items, 40 marks (15.5% A-Level); Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions): Structured questions, 100 marks (A Level 38.5%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) 40 four-choice items, 40 marks 15.5% A-Level 1 h 15 min
Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) Structured questions, 100 marks A Level 38.5% 2 hours

A-Level Biology Paper 1 drilling technique: 40 questions in 1 h 15 min is about 2 min each. Core: eukaryotes have a nucleus and organelles; enzymes lower activation energy via the active site; competitive inhibitors compete, non-competitive change shape; DNA is semi-conservative (one old, one new).

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) all AS content A qualifier read past: always, only, net or rate decides the item, and half a sentence skipped leaves the plausible wrong option chosen.
Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) AS + A2 content A graph read for trend but not axes: units or a broken origin missed, a relative value taken as absolute, and an option that looks close in number is chosen.

What is each A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): all AS content; Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions): AS + A2 content

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: chapter by chapter. Read the textbook diagram first, then that chapter items, and for every wrong one find the paragraph in the book and copy the sentence.\nWeeks 4-6: timed blocks. One section per sitting with the time recorded; aim for steady, not fast, and note which question types overrun.\nWeeks 7-9: flagged items only, each answered with a written note on why the other three options fail.\nWeeks 10-12: full timed papers; practise circling qualifiers and flagging; at review change only answers with textual evidence.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) 1 h 15 min about 2 min per question
Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) 2 hours about 12 min per question

How should the time be split inside each A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1 paper?

Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): about 2 min per question; Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions): about 12 min per question

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Prokaryote as eukaryote Prokaryotes have a nucleus Prokaryotes have no nuclear envelope no envelope
Two inhibition types mixed Non-competitive competes Non-competitive changes the active site shape compete vs reshape
Semi-conservative as conservative Two new strands One old, one new one old, one new
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: the item and the option chosen; the correct option and the textbook sentence behind it; and whether the loss was knowledge, reading or time. A reading error earns the missed qualifier written out, since the same qualifiers recur across the paper.

08

How many years should you drill?

The 9700 multiple-choice scope follows the syllabus, so recent sessions sit closest to what is examined now; older papers still train qualifier and graph reading, but items on content since removed should be marked as no longer examined rather than logged as a knowledge gap.

How many years of past papers is enough?

The 9700 multiple-choice scope follows the syllabus, so recent sessions sit closest to what is examined now; older papers still train qualifier and graph reading, but items on content since removed should be marked as no longer examined rather than logged as a knowledge gap.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Biology 9700 Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

How much detail must be memorised for the MCQ paper?
Not whole paragraphs, but the input, output and location of each process. One-sentence definitions plus one exception, on cards, work better than long passages, because the items test exactly the exceptions.

How should a completed paper be reviewed?
In two passes: flagged items first, then qualifiers only. Untouched items with no circled keyword are left alone, since re-reading them costs time and invites wrong changes.
