AP European History Drill Guide: Short Answer, DBQ, LEQ and a 12-Week Plan

AP European History Drill Guide: Short Answer, DBQ, LEQ and a 12-Week Plan

  • 2026-11-01

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · AP EUROPEAN HISTORY

Marks sit in two places: explaining a concept precisely, and putting documents to work. Short answers test the first, the DBQ and LEQ the second. Method only: the three layers of a short answer, document use and argument in the DBQ, the LEQ skeleton, a twelve-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log. For questions with answers, use the original mock below.

How is AP European History assessed, and what does each part carry?

Section I Part B (Short Answer): 3 questions, all compulsory (20%); Section II (DBQ + LEQ): DBQ 1 + LEQ 1 (40%)

Short answers test concepts; the DBQ and LEQ test document use and argument.

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Section I Part B (Short Answer) 3 questions, all compulsory 20% 40 min
Section II (DBQ + LEQ) DBQ 1 + LEQ 1 40% 1 h 40 min

AP European History drilling technique: short answers need definition, example and context. DBQ: cite and analyse documents, make a clear argument; LEQ: introduction, body, conclusion.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Section I Part B (Short Answer) definition + example + context Short answers give a definition and stop: humanism becomes “valuing people” with no account of classical learning recovered or the place of reason; the Reformation is “criticising the Church” without justification by faith or scriptural authority. The second part asks for a concrete example and still gets abstraction; the third asks for context and gets personal opinion. All three parts circle one level and the later marks are never reached.
Section II (DBQ + LEQ) cite documents, make an argument The DBQ turns into a document-by-document summary: one document per paragraph, never grouped under an argument or set against each other; six are used and none is analysed for origin or purpose; and with no thesis sentence of its own the essay reads as a compilation. The LEQ has a claim but no counter-argument, dates slip (nineteenth-century nationalism placed inside the eighteenth-century Enlightenment), and the conclusion merely repeats the introduction.

What is each AP European History paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Section I Part B (Short Answer): definition + example + context; Section II (DBQ + LEQ): cite documents, make an argument

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks by period, each closing with one short-answer set and one DBQ. Weeks 1-3 cover the Renaissance to the Reformation: humanism, print, where Luther and Calvin diverge, each concept as three lines (definition, one figure, one consequence). Weeks 4-6 are the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the Thirty Years War and the sovereign state, the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment and enlightened absolutism, drilled as causal chains of three layers rather than one. Weeks 7-9 run from the French Revolution to industrialisation, with two competing readings prepared for each theme. Weeks 10-11 are DBQ only on a fixed 60-minute routine (15 minutes reading and grouping documents, 35 writing, 10 checking the document count), using at least seven documents and analysing the origin of two. Week 12 is one timed paper end to end.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Section I Part B (Short Answer) 40 min about 13 min per question
Section II (DBQ + LEQ) 1 h 40 min DBQ 60 min, LEQ 40 min

How should the time be split inside each AP European History paper?

Section I Part B (Short Answer): about 13 min per question; Section II (DBQ + LEQ): DBQ 60 min, LEQ 40 min

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Humanism wrong Religion only Humanism stresses humans and classical learning human + reason + classical
Luther missing Criticism only Include justification by faith faith alone + Scripture authority
Enlightenment core Liberty only Reason is the core reason + natural rights
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: chronology (which century, and whether cause and effect are reversed), concept (can it be said in one definition plus one figure plus one consequence), documents (how many used, and whether any origin or purpose was analysed). Three entries in one column within a week means next week drills only that column. Documents is the cheapest to fix: group them into three camps on scrap paper before writing, label each camp’s position, and the essay stops being a summary relay.

08

How many years should you drill?

Past short-answer, DBQ and LEQ questions with scoring guidelines are published by AP Central for recent sessions, so drill six to eight sessions and score each against the guideline, especially the document-use and thesis rows of the DBQ. Released multiple-choice papers are not published; that volume comes from school mocks and original papers, and this page does not restate that section’s weighting – check the current course description. It is revised every few years and the period split can shift, so confirm the version before drilling.

How many years of past papers is enough?

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the AP European History drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the AP European History mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Must a DBQ use every document?
No, but it must use enough. A workable floor is seven, two of them analysed for origin or purpose and the rest each appearing once under some argument. Grouping matters more than count: sort the documents into three camps by position, write one sentence per camp on what it proves, and the essay structures itself. Ten documents summarised one by one still score below seven grouped into three.

How do I write the context part of a short answer without drifting?
One sentence giving time, place and causation – no evaluation. A usable frame is “because X, by the year Y, Z”, which places the event beside what else was happening within a decade of it. If the sentence contains no year you can point to in the textbook, it has drifted; plainer is safer than prettier.
