DSE Biology Paper 2: Keyword Order Across Both Electives

DSE Biology Paper 2: Keyword Order Across Both Electives

  • 2026-11-03

Two electives at twenty marks each: keywords carry the mark

Paper 2 examines the elective parts only: four questions and twenty marks per elective, forty marks inside sixty minutes, so roughly twenty-five minutes each with ten held back for review. Marks live in keywords: regulation answers follow stimulus, receptor, centre, response and back to normal; ecology answers lead with the calculation then the unit; microbiology answers keep killing apart from inhibiting.

How is DSE Biology Paper 2 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control): Endocrine and nervous regulation, reproduction and homeostasis; 4 ques (10%); Elective 2: Applied Ecology: Energy flow, pollution and indicators, conservation and sustainable de (10%); Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans: Microbial growth and control, food and industrial uses, disease and im (10%); Elective 4: Biotechnology: Steps and tools of genetic engineering, PCR, GMOs, biotechnology produ (10%); The rest of the subject (for reference): Paper 1 covers the Compulsory Part at 60% in 2 hours 30 minutes (Secti (60% + 20%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control) Endocrine and nervous regulation, reproduction and homeostasis; 4 questions, 20 marks in this paper, the mark the sample paper gives each part 10% 1 hour (whole paper)
Elective 2: Applied Ecology Energy flow, pollution and indicators, conservation and sustainable development; 4 questions, 20 marks in this paper 10% 1 hour (whole paper)
Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans Microbial growth and control, food and industrial uses, disease and immunity, aseptic technique; 4 questions, 20 marks in this paper 10% 1 hour (whole paper)
Elective 4: Biotechnology Steps and tools of genetic engineering, PCR, GMOs, biotechnology products and ethics; 4 questions, 20 marks in this paper 10% 1 hour (whole paper)
The rest of the subject (for reference) Paper 1 covers the Compulsory Part at 60% in 2 hours 30 minutes (Section A multiple-choice 18% of the subject mark, Section B 42%, all compulsory); SBA is 20% (practical skills 8%, investigative reports 12%) 60% + 20% 2 h 30 min

Paper 2 gives you 60 minutes for two parts, 40 marks in total (20 marks each): aim at about 25 minutes per part and keep 10 minutes to check. Biology marks sit in the key words – stimulus, receptor, centre and response in regulation; a formula and a unit in ecology; kill against inhibit in microbiology; and the steps in order in biotechnology. Right ideas without the terms still lose marks.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control) Write regulation answers as stimulus, receptor, centre, response, back to normal Receptor left out, so the answer jumps from stimulus to response and loses the mechanism marks.
Elective 2: Applied Ecology Show the formula for quadrat and energy work; answer conservation as cause, consequence, action Ecology answer with no calculation line, so a correct number still earns nothing.
Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans Separate killing microorganisms from merely inhibiting them Time split unevenly, leaving fifteen minutes for the second elective and two blanks.
Elective 4: Biotechnology Write the workflow in order: cut, join, introduce, select, culture Microbiology answers conflating killing with inhibiting, describing inhibition as all cells dead.
The rest of the subject (for reference) Paper 2 is electives only; do not mix it with Paper 1 compulsory content An elective left partly unread, so a wholly unfamiliar question is left blank.

What is each DSE Biology Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control): Write regulation answers as stimulus, receptor, centre, response, back to normal; Elective 2: Applied Ecology: Show the formula for quadrat and energy work; answer conservation as cause, consequence, action; Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans: Separate killing microorganisms from merely inhibiting them; Elective 4: Biotechnology: Write the workflow in order: cut, join, introduce, select, culture; The rest of the subject (for reference): Paper 2 is electives only; do not mix it with Paper 1 compulsory content

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: a keyword table per elective topic, three columns, question type, compulsory keywords, one habitual omission, listing only what actually slips. Weeks 4-6: timed pairs, two questions in twenty minutes, then circling every missed keyword against the table. Weeks 7-9: alternate the electives, two questions each per week, practising the switch from human physiology to applied ecology. Weeks 10-12: two full papers a week with ten minutes of review held back.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control) 1 hour (whole paper) about 30 min
Elective 2: Applied Ecology 1 hour (whole paper) about 30 min
Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans 1 hour (whole paper) about 30 min
Elective 4: Biotechnology 1 hour (whole paper) about 30 min
The rest of the subject (for reference) 2 h 30 min outside Paper 2

How should the time be split inside each DSE Biology Paper 2 paper?

Elective 1: Human Physiology (Regulation and Control): about 30 min; Elective 2: Applied Ecology: about 30 min; Elective 3: Microorganisms and Humans: about 30 min; Elective 4: Biotechnology: about 30 min; The rest of the subject (for reference): outside Paper 2

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Explaining the phenomenon, not the mechanism Stopping at skin blood vessels dilate Explanation marks need mechanism plus consequence Say that dilation brings more blood near the surface so more heat is lost
Ecology calculations with no formula or unit Writing 4 800 on its own The working earns marks and a missing unit loses them Write density = count ÷ quadrat area, then scale up with its unit
Calling inhibition killing Treating refrigeration as killing microorganisms The two have different mechanisms and outcomes Cold only slows metabolism and reproduction; heat denatures proteins and kills
Biotechnology steps out of order Introducing the gene before cutting it out Procedure marks follow the steps and the tools Cut, join, introduce, select, culture, naming the enzyme or vector at each step
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: the question and the answer written; the keyword missing; whether the loss was conceptual, procedural or a unit. A keyword missed twice means writing the whole sequence from memory the following week.

08

How many years should you drill?

Paper 2 keeps a stable pattern, four questions per elective year after year, so five to seven years covers the main phrasing; items added by later syllabus changes need the official sample papers, with old items kept for concept practice.

How many years of past papers is enough?

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Biology Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Biology Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Does a keyword-complete but loose sentence lose marks?
Yes. Keywords score, yet reversed cause and effect reads as a conceptual error, so state the mechanism in one main clause and order keywords along the sequence.

Should the two electives get equal time?
Across sixty minutes, about twenty-five each with ten shared for review works best; when one elective looks harder, bank the easy marks first and return, since a blank whole question costs more than one skipped part.
