HKDSE Design and Applied Technology Drilling Guide: Paper 1, Paper 2 and a 12-Week Plan
- 2026-11-01
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE DESIGN AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
The marks are spread across three components: Paper 1 is 30%, Paper 2 is 30% and the school-based assessment 40%. The Paper 1 design task needs four layers in order (opportunity, idea, material, communication), Paper 2 tests depth in the elective units, and the SBA tests the whole design process. This page is the drilling method only – drill order, how to write the four layers, a 12-week timetable, pacing and the error log.
How is DSE Design and Applied Technology assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (compulsory): Section A design task (60) + Section B two of three (40) (30%); Paper 2 (elective): Two of five elective modules, two of three each (30%); SBA (design project): One design project, 25-35 hours (40%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | Section A design task (60) + Section B two of three (40) | 30% | 2 h |
| Paper 2 (elective) | Two of five elective modules, two of three each | 30% | 2 h |
| SBA (design project) | One design project, 25-35 hours | 40% | 25-35 h |
Paper 1 in 2 h: about 70 min on Section A (split across the four parts) and 25 min per Section B question. A design task needs opportunity, idea, material and communication.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | opportunity, idea, material, communication | The design task jumps to the idea without the opportunity (who needs it) or a reason for the material, so a whole band of marks goes missing |
| Paper 2 (elective) | automation, digital media, materials, electronics, visualisation | Material questions list properties with no example; in graphics, orthographic and isometric projection are confused, so dimensions and shape are each wrong |
| SBA (design project) | the full design process | Sitting Paper 2 after revising only one elective; calculations omit units and assumptions, so the answer is right but the method marks are gone |
What is each DSE Design and Applied Technology paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (compulsory): opportunity, idea, material, communication; Paper 2 (elective): automation, digital media, materials, electronics, visualisation; SBA (design project): the full design process
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks on three tracks: weeks 1-5 take Paper 1 design tasks, one a week, written in the four blocks (opportunity, idea, material, communication) with a one-line summary opening each. Weeks 6-8 are Paper 2, half the time to each of two electives, three past questions per unit. Weeks 9-10 are timed whole papers (two hours for Paper 1). Weeks 11-12 return to the SBA design record and finish the testing and evaluation section, which is the one most often left thin at the end.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | 2 h | about 70 min Section A, 25 min per Section B |
| Paper 2 (elective) | 2 h | answer two per chosen module |
| SBA (design project) | 25-35 h | physical/virtual model plus design log |
How should the time be split inside each DSE Design and Applied Technology paper?
Paper 1 (compulsory): about 70 min Section A, 25 min per Section B; Paper 2 (elective): answer two per chosen module; SBA (design project): physical/virtual model plus design log
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design task missing layers | Ideas but no opportunity or material | The task needs all four layers | Write opportunity, idea, material, communication in turn |
| Materials without reasons | Properties but no examples | Material answers need property and example | Give an application per material |
| Confusing projections | Mixing orthographic and isometric | The two projections differ in purpose | Orthographic for dimensions, isometric for form |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: layer (which of the four is missing), reason (does every choice carry a sentence of justification), graphics (projection, scale, labelling). Marks here come from four complete layers and a reason for every decision, not from inspiration. Three hits in one column in a week means that column is next week only.
How many years should you drill?
The HKEAA releases each year’s papers, marking schemes and candidates’ performance samples. The syllabus has been stable since the 2016 exam, so Papers 1 and 2 from 2016 onward are enough; earlier years used different elective combinations and need checking against the current syllabus.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Design and Applied Technology drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Design and Applied Technology mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
How many of the five Paper 2 electives should I prepare?
The paper asks two questions, each chosen from three, so two electives must be solid and a third is the backup. Preparing only one is the common fatal error: if that unit is examined narrowly there is no way out. Split revision time evenly between two.
I cannot draw well – am I doomed in the design task?
No. The marks go to a complete design process and the reasons behind each decision. A sketch only has to show dimensions, materials and how the product is used. Four complete layers with a justification each score higher than a beautiful drawing with one layer missing.
