DSE Geography Paper 1: Four Rhythms and the Data Chain
- 2026-11-03
Four sections, four rhythms, and a four-step data chain
Paper 1 runs 165 minutes: Section A multiple choice at 20% of the subject, Section B field-work based at 15%, Section C data skills at 30%, with Section D short essays filling the rest. Section C marks sit in four steps, read the value, calculate, state the unit, draw the conclusion; Section B must cite field methods and data; Section D wants sub-headings so the examiner can follow the argument.
How is DSE Geography Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Section A (multiple-choice): Compulsory and elective knowledge base; 20% of the subject mark (20%); Section B (field-work based): Set in a field-work context; 15% of the subject mark (15%); Section C (data-skill based): Map, graph and statistical analysis; 30% of the subject mark (30%); Section D (short essay): Discursive answers using course concepts; 10% of the subject mark (10%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A (multiple-choice) | Compulsory and elective knowledge base; 20% of the subject mark | 20% | 30 min |
| Section B (field-work based) | Set in a field-work context; 15% of the subject mark | 15% | 25 min |
| Section C (data-skill based) | Map, graph and statistical analysis; 30% of the subject mark | 30% | 80 min |
| Section D (short essay) | Discursive answers using course concepts; 10% of the subject mark | 10% | 30 min |
Paper 1 runs 165 minutes: about 30 for Section A, 25 for B, 80 for C and 30 for D. Section C marks follow reading, calculating, unit, conclusion – miss one and you lose that step. Headings in the short essay make the marker’s job easy.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Section A (multiple-choice) | Scale, contours and data conversion must be quick | Scale conversion eating Section A, five items left at the thirty-minute mark. |
| Section B (field-work based) | Answers must cite field methods and data | Section B conclusion only, with no field method, losing the whole method strand. |
| Section C (data-skill based) | Read the value, calculate, then give the unit and conclusion | Section C without units, correct numbers and low marks. |
| Section D (short essay) | Structure as cause, impact, measure | Section D in one block with no sub-headings, arguments missed by the examiner. |
What is each DSE Geography Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Section A (multiple-choice): Scale, contours and data conversion must be quick; Section B (field-work based): Answers must cite field methods and data; Section C (data-skill based): Read the value, calculate, then give the unit and conclusion; Section D (short essay): Structure as cause, impact, measure
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: one operation card each for scale, contours, climate graphs and statistics, three actions and one known error per card. Weeks 4-6: Section C pairs, forcing four lines, value read, calculation, unit, conclusion. Weeks 7-9: the Section B frame, method first, then data, then limitations. Weeks 10-12: one full paper a week split into 30, 25, 80 and 30 minute blocks.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Section A (multiple-choice) | 30 min | about 30 min |
| Section B (field-work based) | 25 min | about 25 min |
| Section C (data-skill based) | 80 min | about 80 min |
| Section D (short essay) | 30 min | about 30 min |
How should the time be split inside each DSE Geography Paper 1 paper?
Section A (multiple-choice): about 30 min; Section B (field-work based): about 25 min; Section C (data-skill based): about 80 min; Section D (short essay): about 30 min
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conclusions without working | “urbanisation is 60%” and nothing else | Section C marks are per reading, calculation, unit and conclusion | Quote the figures used, then the working and the unit |
| Scale unit errors | cm and km mixed up | One unit slip loses the whole item | Convert to cm first and only translate to m or km at the end |
| Point-form essays | Four lines of points | Section D asks for cause, impact and measure | Add a reason or example to every point |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the question and the answer given; which of the four steps went missing; whether the fault was the skill or the reading of the figure. Missing units and missing conclusions get their own tally, and a third repeat means rewriting the operation card.
How many years should you drill?
The four-section structure and skill demands have held for years, so five to seven years covers the main patterns; case-based items need recent examples, with old items kept for skill practice.
How many years of past papers is enough?
The four-section structure and skill demands have held for years, so five to seven years covers the main patterns; case-based items need recent examples, with old items kept for skill practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Geography Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Geography Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Section C answers are long but score low, why?
Length is irrelevant; the four steps decide it. A conclusion without the value read and the calculation leaves nothing to credit, so write one line of reading, one of calculation, then the conclusion.
May field-work answers use invented data?
Use the data the question supplies, never numbers of your own. Methods and limitations must be concrete, sampling method and sample size scoring far higher than vague field observation.
