DSE Tourism and Hospitality Drilling Guide: Data Response and Essays in 12 Weeks

DSE Tourism and Hospitality Drilling Guide: Data Response and Essays in 12 Weeks

  • 2026-11-01

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · DSE TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

Built on the HKDSE Tourism and Hospitality syllabus: Paper 1 multiple choice and data response (1 h 30, 45%), Paper 2 essays (1 h 45, three of five, 55%), no school-based assessment. Method only: drill order across the two papers, how to quote and then work the data, the three layers of an essay, a 12-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log.

How is DSE Tourism and Hospitality assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 2 (essays): 3 of 5 essay questions (55%); Paper 1 (MC + data-response): Section A MC + Section B data-response, 3 choose 2 (45%); Whole subject (public examination, no SBA): Paper 1 45% + Paper 2 55% (100%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 2 (essays) 3 of 5 essay questions 55% 1.75 h
Paper 1 (MC + data-response) Section A MC + Section B data-response, 3 choose 2 45% 1.5 h
Whole subject (public examination, no SBA) Paper 1 45% + Paper 2 55% 100% 3.25 h total

Three essays in 1.75 h is about 30 minutes each with 15 to check. Essay answers need point, example and evaluation, with a concrete example behind each point.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 2 (essays) point, example, evaluation Essays argue one side only with no evaluation; examples stop at more visitors arriving, naming no destination, sector or strategy, so the claim cannot be checked
Paper 1 (MC + data-response) quote sources first, then analyse Data response answers copy the source without working it (comparing, projecting, naming a limitation); multiple choice is answered from general knowledge, ignoring the figures given
Whole subject (public examination, no SBA) re-check the framework figures each year The papers are sat separately; Paper 2 allows about 30 minutes a question, but 40 are spent on the first two and the third gets ten minutes

What is each DSE Tourism and Hospitality paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 2 (essays): point, example, evaluation; Paper 1 (MC + data-response): quote sources first, then analyse; Whole subject (public examination, no SBA): re-check the framework figures each year

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks stock the material before drilling. Weeks 1-4 build one case card per syllabus strand (introduction to tourism, socio-cultural impacts, economic impacts, sustainable tourism, hospitality operations, destination management), each with three concrete examples and one set of figures. Weeks 5-7 drill Paper 1 with the quote, work, limit sequence enforced. Weeks 8-11 take one Paper 2 a week, three essays in 90 minutes; week 12 is a full simulation plus rewriting the two weakest answers.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 2 (essays) 1.75 h about 30 min per essay
Paper 1 (MC + data-response) 1.5 h about 20 min MC, 30 min per data-response
Whole subject (public examination, no SBA) 3.25 h total the papers are sat separately

How should the time be split inside each DSE Tourism and Hospitality paper?

Paper 2 (essays): about 30 min per essay; Paper 1 (MC + data-response): about 20 min MC, 30 min per data-response; Whole subject (public examination, no SBA): the papers are sat separately

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Vague essays “Very important” with no example The scheme wants concrete examples Give a destination, strategy or industry example per point
One side only Importance but not risks Questions usually ask for both sides Break the question down and answer each part
Ignoring the sources Stating without quoting the data Data-response answers must use the sources Quote the source first, then analyse and evaluate
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: example (a named destination, business or strategy), working (was the source compared or projected), evaluation (a conditional conclusion). The gap between bands sits in the second column: data copied faithfully but never worked earns the content marks and loses the analysis ones.

08

How many years should you drill?

The subject has been examined since 2012 with the same two-paper shape; data response sources in recent years lean on official statistics and news reports. Five or six years cover the question types, but destinations and figures date quickly – swap in current data when you answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Tourism and Hospitality drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Tourism and Hospitality mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

How should the three of five essays be chosen?
Read all five first and pick the three you can support with three concrete examples, not the three whose topic looks most familiar. At least one should come from your thickest case card as a safe mark, and one should let you quote figures. Spend no more than five minutes choosing.

With no SBA, is project work unnecessary?
Correct – the two papers carry the whole result. That also concentrates every mark in the written exam, split roughly evenly between data response and essays, so neither can be dropped: essays alone with a blank data response pins the total in the lower middle.
