IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 Drill Guide: Entries, Trial Balance, Statements
- 2026-11-04
Entries balance, statements tie
Paper 2 is the structured written paper: five compulsory questions, one hundred marks, an hour and three quarters, seventy per cent (Paper 1 is forty marks of multiple choice, thirty per cent). The five usually cover double entry and ledger accounts, the trial balance and correction of errors, preparing the income statement and statement of financial position, adjustments for depreciation, accruals, prepayments and bad debts, and an analysis question on ratios or cash flow. Marks go in three places: a wrong entry direction that corrupts the whole question, statements missing titles and dates, and adjustments given as numbers with no reason. Budget about twenty minutes a question, and protect format marks even at the cost of a calculation.
How is IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper): 5 compulsory questions, 100 marks (70%); Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): 40 questions, 40 marks (30%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper) | 5 compulsory questions, 100 marks | 70% | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 40 questions, 40 marks | 30% | 1 h 30 min |
IGCSE Accounting drilling technique: 5 questions in 1 h 45 min is about 20 minutes each. Write debit/credit directions for double entry; show formulas for calculations (gross profit, gross margin).
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper) | debit/credit rules + calculation | Debit and credit are reversed, corrupting the question. |
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | eliminate clearly wrong options | Statements lack titles and dates, losing all format marks. |
What is each IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper): debit/credit rules + calculation; Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): eliminate clearly wrong options
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: one double-entry question a day, direction and posting only, marked at once with a written note on why the credit side. Weeks 4-6: two statement questions a week with titles, dates and units, totals checked against the trial balance. Weeks 7-9: full papers in an hour and three quarters at twenty minutes a question, moving on when time is up. Weeks 10-12: adjustments and ratio analysis only, one sentence of reason each, plus a one-page list of accounts you misname.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper) | 1 h 45 min | about 20 min per question |
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 1 h 30 min | about 2 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 paper?
Paper 2 (Structured Written Paper): about 20 min per question; Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): about 2 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debit/credit reversed | Credit inventory on cash purchase | Asset increase is a debit | debit inventory, credit cash |
| Gross margin formula | Profit/cost | Gross margin = gross profit / revenue | 40% |
| Current/non-current | Machinery as current | Machinery is held beyond a year | machinery = non-current |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: question type and number; whether the loss was direction, format, adjustment or arithmetic; and the repair, naming the first line to write or the total to recheck. Three losses of a kind means three questions of that type next week plus the original error redone.
How many years should you drill?
The current 0452 syllabus is first assessed in 2027, and this five-question written paper plus multiple choice split is its shape; 2027 specimens and papers fit best. Papers from 2020 to 2026 share the format and remain usable, with an eye on updated terminology.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Accounting 0452 Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
What should I drop if time runs out?
Statements first (densest marks, steady format credit), then entries, then analysis. Drop only the final sub-part of a question, since the early parts carry format marks.
Must the trial balance balance before moving on?
Yes. Stop and trace it: a missing posting or a one-sided entry is usual, and carrying a wrong total corrupts the statements after it.
