IGCSE First Language Chinese 0509 Paper 1 Drill Guide: Quotation and Own Words

IGCSE First Language Chinese 0509 Paper 1 Drill Guide: Quotation and Own Words

  • 2026-11-04

Quotation must carry, wording must be yours

Paper 1 has reading, directed writing and classical Chinese, all compulsory, with no dictionary allowed. Reading marks come from quoting the line that supports each answer and then explaining in your own words what it proves; naming a device earns nothing unless you say what it does here. Directed writing is marked on using both sources and rewriting them in your own sentences, since copying keeps the answer mid-band. The classical section is reading only: work out the word class before translating, and infer unfamiliar characters from context.

How is IGCSE First Language Chinese Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese): Three compulsory sections: 23 + 25 + 12 marks (50%); Paper 2 (Writing): Two questions, 25 marks each: argumentative or discursive, then descri (50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese) Three compulsory sections: 23 + 25 + 12 marks 50% 2 h 15 min
Paper 2 (Writing) Two questions, 25 marks each: argumentative or discursive, then descriptive or narrative 50% 2 hours

IGCSE First Language Chinese 0509 Paper 1 drilling technique: all three sections are compulsory and answers go on the question paper, with no dictionary; for the deeper comprehension and language questions, state the effect, not just the name of the device; directed writing is 250-350 characters, must use both passages in your own words, and may not bring in outside opinions; in the classical Chinese section only reading is tested, so decide each word’s grammatical role before translating.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese) quotation plus own words Reading answers rely on impression with no quotation.
Paper 2 (Writing) clear position and concrete detail Directed writing copies the sources instead of rewriting them.

What is each IGCSE First Language Chinese Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese): quotation plus own words; Paper 2 (Writing): clear position and concrete detail

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: reading items only, marking the quotation first and writing one explanation sentence, checking only whether the quotation was the right one. Weeks 4-6: devices and deeper meaning, three sentences per device covering the technique, its effect and what it makes a reader think. Weeks 7-9: timed papers, directed writing inside 55 minutes, then counting and rewriting copied sentences. Weeks 10-12: unseen years, one classical passage a day, word class before translation, with a one-page list of recurring characters.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese) 2 h 15 min 45 min reading, 55 min directed writing, 25 min classical Chinese, 10 min checking
Paper 2 (Writing) 2 hours about 50 min a question; plan first

How should the time be split inside each IGCSE First Language Chinese Paper 1 paper?

Paper 1 (Reading, Directed Writing and Classical Chinese): 45 min reading, 55 min directed writing, 25 min classical Chinese, 10 min checking; Paper 2 (Writing): about 50 min a question; plan first

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Naming a device only ‘It is a metaphor’ Loses all the effect marks Give the elements and the effect
Copying the passage Lifting sentences into the directed writing Content marks drop Paraphrase the meaning
Adding outside opinion Writing personal views The task allows only the passages Argue from the two passages
Word-by-word translation Guessing without grammar Translation marks lost Decide the grammatical role first
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: the item and the skill (quotation choice, deeper meaning, device effect, directed writing, classical translation); whether the loss was a wrong quotation, a device named with no effect, copied wording, or a misjudged word class; the repair, naming the quotation to re-pair or the sentence to rewrite. Three losses in one skill takes the next week.

08

How many years should you drill?

The three sections and their demands have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers reading, directed writing and classical items; the source passages change yearly, so older papers are practice for technique, with requirements checked against the current paper description.

How many years of past papers is enough?

The three sections and their demands have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers reading, directed writing and classical items; the source passages change yearly, so older papers are practice for technique, with requirements checked against the current paper description.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE First Language Chinese Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE First Language Chinese Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

What counts as using both sources?
Both need substance in the piece, with their relationship stated, whether they complement or oppose. One copied line from each in the opening reads as no integration.

Must classical characters be memorised?
A short high-frequency list helps, but word class matters more: a noun used as a verb, or causative and putative uses, changes the sentence. Ten seconds of labelling beats rote recall.
