IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Paper 1 Drill Guide: Layered Parts, Data and Management Answers
- 2026-11-04
About a minute a mark, small parts first
Paper 1 Principles of Environmental Management carries 80 marks in 1 h 45 min, half the qualification, every question compulsory, grades A* to G. Four questions run from natural resources through land and soil, water and pollution, to the atmosphere and human activity, each split into parts that turn into short essays at the end. Budget by mark: 80 marks in 1 h 45 min leaves about a minute a mark, so the small parts must be fast and exact to buy time for the management question.
How is IGCSE Environmental Management Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an ext (80 · 50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) | 80 marks: short-answer and structured questions, plus one extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory | 80 · 50% | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) | 80 marks: short-answer items, data processing and analysis, and an extended response that uses the source material; all questions compulsory | 80 · 50% | 1 h 45 min |
Paper 1 technique: 80 marks in 1 h 45 min is about 1.3 minutes per mark. Show the formula and the unit in every calculation: years of reserves = reserves / annual extraction; net erosion = erosion minus soil formation; topsoil mass = depth x bulk density x 1000; water stress compares availability per person with 1700 m3; mixed BOD is weighted by flow; a percentage rise takes the original value as the denominator. For the extended response state a position, give two or three data-based points and finish by comparing the strategies.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) | calculations first, extended response last | A two-mark definition takes three lines of background. |
| Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) | process the data table first, extended response last | Data answers state a trend without quoting figures or units. |
What is each IGCSE Environmental Management Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): calculations first, extended response last; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): process the data table first, extended response last
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: small parts only, one definition and one example inside thirty seconds. Weeks 4-6: data and graph questions, three sentences on trend, extreme and anomaly before any explanation. Weeks 7-9: full papers at 1 h 45 min, moving on the moment a question overruns its budget. Weeks 10-12: unseen questions, management answers in four fixed layers, problem, method, limitation and evaluation.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management) | 1 h 45 min | about 1.3 min per mark |
| Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context) | 1 h 45 min | about 1.3 min per mark |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Environmental Management Paper 1 paper?
Paper 1 (Principles of Environmental Management): about 1.3 min per mark; Paper 2 (Environmental Management in Context): about 1.3 min per mark
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reserve life over total extraction | Dividing by 4800 | The denominator is the annual 160 | 30 years |
| Erosion taken as soil formation | Reporting 0.8 tonnes per hectare | Net loss is 12.0 – 0.8 | 11.2 tonnes per hectare per year |
| Missing the 1000 conversion | 0.15 x 1.35 = 0.2025 kg | 1 tonne per m3 is 1000 kg per m3 | 202.5 kg per m2 |
| Mixed BOD as a simple average | (48 + 2) / 2 | Weight by flow instead | about 4.7 mg per litre |
| Percentage rise over the new value | Using 1900 as the denominator | A percentage rise uses the original 700 | 171.4% |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the question and part; whether the loss was a loose definition, a missing unit, unused data or an unevaluated management method; the case to learn next. Three losses in one topic makes that topic the week.
How many years should you drill?
The 80 marks, 1 h 45 min and 50 per cent weighting hold within a syllabus period, so five years covers the four topics; case data and named examples change between syllabuses, so old papers are practice only.
How many years of past papers is enough?
The 80 marks, 1 h 45 min and 50 per cent weighting hold within a syllabus period, so five years covers the four topics; case data and named examples change between syllabuses, so old papers are practice only.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Environmental Management Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Environmental Management Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Should the last question be abandoned when time runs short?
No. Its opening parts are definitions and description and repay ten minutes well; what gets sacrificed first is the evaluation tail of each question.
Is a trend statement enough for a graph question?
No. State the trend, quote the figures with units, then explain the cause; a bare rise earns only the bottom of the description marks.
