IGCSE Geography 0460 Drilling Guide: Drill Order, Structured Answers and a 12-Week Plan
- 2026-11-01
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE GEOGRAPHY 0460
Built on the Cambridge 0460 syllabus (2027-2029 sessions): Paper 2 human geography, 75 marks, 1 h 45 min, compulsory (Section A 25 marks, one compulsory question, plus Section B 50 marks, three questions and you answer two); Paper 1 physical geography is also 75 marks in 1 h 45 min, on rivers, coasts and weather. Method only: the drill order across the two papers, how to write the definition-plus-example-plus-extension structured answer, how to pick two of three in Section B, a 12-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is IGCSE Geography 0460 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 2 (Human Geography): Section A 25 + Section B 50 (75 marks); Paper 1 (Physical Geography): Structured questions, 75 marks (75 marks)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Human Geography) | Section A 25 + Section B 50 | 75 marks | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 1 (Physical Geography) | Structured questions, 75 marks | 75 marks | 1 h 45 min |
IGCSE Geography drilling technique: 3 questions in 1 h 45 min. Structured questions need definition, example and extended response; in Section B pick the two you know best.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Human Geography) | definition + example + extended response | Section A stops at a definition, so the 10-mark explain item never states the mechanism behind “how it shows”; Section B writes three long paragraphs with no named country or place as evidence, so the extended response stays descriptive |
| Paper 1 (Physical Geography) | rivers, coasts, weather | Questions picked from impression rather than evidence: the two chosen in Section B look familiar but carry no recallable example, and one goes off-syllabus entirely; Section A takes 45 minutes of the 1 h 45, leaving 15 minutes for the last question |
What is each IGCSE Geography 0460 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 2 (Human Geography): definition + example + extended response; Paper 1 (Physical Geography): rivers, coasts, weather
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks deliberately split physical from human, because each paper carries 75 marks and neither can carry the grade alone. Weeks 1-3 do Paper 2 Section A only: four 10-mark explain items a week at 12 minutes each, forcing a mechanism plus one named place into every answer. Weeks 4-6 take Section B: two 25-mark questions a week, three minutes planning three points before writing, 35 minutes to write, then a mark-scheme check on whether the extended response actually lands. Weeks 7-9 switch to Paper 1, taking rivers, coasts and weather in turn at about 25 minutes a question, with the emphasis on writing processes as ordered steps rather than keyword piles. Weeks 10-11 sit one full paper a week (1 h 45) to practise the Section B choice; week 12 is a two-paper simulation, with the remaining days on the weakest topic.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (Human Geography) | 1 h 45 min | A ~30 min, B ~35 min each |
| Paper 1 (Physical Geography) | 1 h 45 min | about 25 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Geography 0460 paper?
Paper 2 (Human Geography): A ~30 min, B ~35 min each; Paper 1 (Physical Geography): about 25 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyramid misread | Narrow base as high birth | Wide base means high birth rate | wide base = high birth |
| Sector mixed | Manufacturing as primary | Manufacturing is secondary | primary=farming, secondary=manufacturing |
| GDP limits | High GDP only | GDP ignores distribution/health/education | HDI is fuller |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: mechanism (did the explain item say why, or only what), example (one named place, with plausible figures), choice (why a Section B question was picked and abandoned: no example, wrong topic), time (did Section A overrun 30 minutes). The third column is the one nobody keeps, and it is where the 25-mark questions are lost: not from weak writing, but from choosing a question there is no material for.
How many years should you drill?
0460 keeps one structure through the 2027-2029 sessions: Paper 1 physical and Paper 2 human, 75 marks and 1 h 45 each, with Component 3 coursework or Paper 4 geographical investigation alongside. Question types on both papers have been stable for years, so five sessions cover them, but the case-study figures (population, urbanisation, river discharge) move with the year: older questions are fine for structure, the numbers must be current. Paper 4 is a different mode of assessment and is prepared separately from Papers 1 and 2.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Geography 0460 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Geography 0460 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
How do you choose two of the three Section B questions?
Filter on evidence, not familiarity. In the first three minutes read all three and ask of each: can I name one place and two concrete figures for this? Take the two that pass. If none pass, take the two with the clearest sub-parts, because sub-parts can be marked point by point. Never spend ten minutes before noticing there is no material, by then there is no time to switch.
How detailed should a physical geography process answer be?
As ordered steps, one action per step, each naming the force or condition that drives it: hydraulic action leading to abrasion and then to the resulting landform, not the three words erosion, transport, deposition. Mark schemes pay for linkage, because A so B, which forms C. Keep each step short but never break the sequence.
