- 2026-11-02
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES (0457) COMPONENT 1
Built on the current Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 assessment: Component 1 is a written paper worth 35% (70 marks in 1 h 25 min), Component 2 is the individual report at 30% (60 marks) and Component 3 the team project at 35% (70 marks). This page covers the drilling method only: question values and pacing, citation and reliability practice, a 12-week timetable, the usual mark losses and the error log. Use the mock paper linked below for questions.
How is IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457) assessed, and what does each part carry?
Component 1 (Written Exam): Four compulsory questions: 18 + 16 + 16 + 20 marks (35%); Component 2 (Individual Report): 60 marks (30%); Component 3 (Team Project): 70 marks = team element 25 + personal element 45 (35%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | Four compulsory questions: 18 + 16 + 16 + 20 marks | 35% | 1 h 25 min |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | 60 marks | 30% | school-assessed |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | 70 marks = team element 25 + personal element 45 | 35% | school-assessed |
IGCSE Global Perspectives Component 1 drilling technique: cite the source number for every point; in comparison questions set both positions side by side; when judging reliability use the date, the sample and the interests involved; Question 4 carries 20 marks, so keep 30 minutes for a piece with a position, recommendations and an opposing case. The assessment objectives weigh AO1 68%, reflection 15% and communication and collaboration 17%, so analysis and evaluation dominate.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | citation, comparison, reliability | Copying source wording without restating the issue in your own words; the 18-mark question answers one side only and never explains how perspectives differ |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | analysis of sources, own perspective | Reliability answers say a source is trustworthy without naming the basis: who wrote it, when, and whether it carries data |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | collaboration, action, reflection | The team project blurs the 25-mark team element with the 45-mark personal element, and the reflection never links back to the action taken |
What is each IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457) paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Component 1 (Written Exam): citation, comparison, reliability; Component 2 (Individual Report): analysis of sources, own perspective; Component 3 (Team Project): collaboration, action, reflection
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Global Perspectives runs in three passes over 12 weeks: weeks 1-4 drill only questions 2 and 3 (16 marks each), two per week, each one forced to cite at least two sources and state in one sentence why the perspectives differ; weeks 5-8 move to question 1 (18 marks) and question 4 (20 marks) under a 25-minute per-question clock; weeks 9-10 sit the whole Component 1 paper in 1 h 25 min while the source-analysis section of the Component 2 report reaches a third draft; the last fortnight redoes the recurring error types and finalises the Component 3 reflective paper.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | 1 h 25 min | 20 min on Q1, 30 min on Q4, about 15 min each on Q2 and Q3 |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | school-assessed | choose the issue and sources first, then write analysis and conclusions |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | school-assessed | research and planning up to 400 words, reflective paper up to 1000 words |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457) paper?
Component 1 (Written Exam): 20 min on Q1, 30 min on Q4, about 15 min each on Q2 and Q3; Component 2 (Individual Report): choose the issue and sources first, then write analysis and conclusions; Component 3 (Team Project): research and planning up to 400 words, reflective paper up to 1000 words
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| No citations | Opinions with no source | Analysis marks fall away | Cite the source number each time |
| Two separate paragraphs | Describing each side separately | No comparison made | Set the two sides side by side |
| Vague evaluation | ‘The source is unreliable’ | No evaluation marks | Name the date, sample or interest problem |
| No recommendations | Describing the problem only | The task is not answered | Propose action and how to judge it |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns, never copied-out questions: issue (is the disagreement stated in your own words), citation (which source, and which sentence it backs), basis (does the reliability answer name author, date or data). Three hits in one column within a week and next week drills that column only: the marks sit on whether a reason is given, not on length.
How many years should you drill?
Component 1 is a fixed four-question written paper under the current 0457 assessment, and public papers are limited, so By Year cannot build a large sample: split the four questions by task type, drill each until it fits inside 20 minutes, then move to timed whole papers. Cambridge specimen material and the published mark examples are the closest substitute for a long run of past papers.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457) drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457) mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
