TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES 0457
IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 is assessed in three parts: Component 1 written paper (35%, four compulsory questions worth 18+16+16+20), Component 2 Individual Report (30%, 60 marks) and Component 3 Team Project (35%, 70 marks – 25 team plus 45 individual). All three test the same moves: cite, compare, judge credibility, propose action. This page covers method – order, a 12-week plan, pacing, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Component 1 (Written Exam): Four compulsory questions: 18 + 16 + 16 + 20 marks (35%); Component 2 (Individual Report): 60 marks (30%); Component 3 (Team Project): 70 marks = team element 25 + personal element 45 (35%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | Four compulsory questions: 18 + 16 + 16 + 20 marks | 35% | 1 h 25 min |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | 60 marks | 30% | school-assessed |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | 70 marks = team element 25 + personal element 45 | 35% | school-assessed |
IGCSE Global Perspectives Component 1 drilling technique: cite the source number for every point; in comparison questions set both positions side by side; when judging reliability use the date, the sample and the interests involved; Question 4 carries 20 marks, so keep 30 minutes for a piece with a position, recommendations and an opposing case. The assessment objectives weigh AO1 68%, reflection 15% and communication and collaboration 17%, so analysis and evaluation dominate.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | citation, comparison, reliability | Every point states an opinion with no source number; comparison answers describe each side in a separate paragraph |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | analysis of sources, own perspective | Individual Report: background written before the question is fixed, one perspective only, and the conclusion never answers the question set |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | collaboration, action, reflection | Team Project: action taken but never evaluated; the reflection records feelings instead of roles, division of work and decisions |
What is each IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Component 1 (Written Exam): citation, comparison, reliability; Component 2 (Individual Report): analysis of sources, own perspective; Component 3 (Team Project): collaboration, action, reflection
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: The twelve weeks turn the moves into habit: weeks 1-3 one real Component 1 paper a week, drilling only citing and comparison (a source number beside every point); weeks 4-6 the 20-mark fourth question (stance, proposal, counter-argument; 30 minutes timed); weeks 7-9 the Individual Report, question fixed first, one perspective a week; weeks 10-11 the Team Project research and action record; the last week is a timed paper plus the error log.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Component 1 (Written Exam) | 1 h 25 min | 20 min on Q1, 30 min on Q4, about 15 min each on Q2 and Q3 |
| Component 2 (Individual Report) | school-assessed | choose the issue and sources first, then write analysis and conclusions |
| Component 3 (Team Project) | school-assessed | research and planning up to 400 words, reflective paper up to 1000 words |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 paper?
Component 1 (Written Exam): 20 min on Q1, 30 min on Q4, about 15 min each on Q2 and Q3; Component 2 (Individual Report): choose the issue and sources first, then write analysis and conclusions; Component 3 (Team Project): research and planning up to 400 words, reflective paper up to 1000 words
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| No citations | Opinions with no source | Analysis marks fall away | Cite the source number each time |
| Two separate paragraphs | Describing each side separately | No comparison made | Set the two sides side by side |
| Vague evaluation | ‘The source is unreliable’ | No evaluation marks | Name the date, sample or interest problem |
| No recommendations | Describing the problem only | The task is not answered | Propose action and how to judge it |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: citation (is the source number written), comparison (both sides in one paragraph, or two separate descriptions), judgement (date, sample, stance). The third column is usually empty – “the source is unreliable” scores nothing; name which of the three makes it limited.
How many years should you drill?
The Component 1 question shapes have been consistent for years, so work back three sessions or more. Components 2 and 3 are internally assessed, so there is no public work to copy – mark your own drafts against the official criteria line by line. Drill the two most recent Component 1 sessions first and use older ones for the 20-mark structure.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
There are no past papers for Components 2 and 3 – how do I drill them?
Turn the mark scheme into questions: rewrite every criterion as a question and check whether your draft answers it. Fix a 200-word question for the Individual Report, and a division of work plus action plan for the Team Project, then mark yourself once before the teacher does.
Does the 20-mark fourth question need a counter-argument?
Yes. It asks for a stance, a proposal and a counter-argument; one-sided answers cannot reach the top band however many points they carry, because evaluation and communication are scored through that paragraph.
