TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE HISTORY 0470
IGCSE History 0470 turns on two papers: Paper 1 structured essay (40%, 2 hours, two from Section A plus one from Section B, each in parts a/b/c) and Paper 2 documents (30%, one 40-mark question on the depth study), with the rest internally assessed. This page covers method – drill order, a 12-week plan, the 40-minute split per question, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is IGCSE History 0470 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Structured Essays): 2 from A + 1 from B, each a/b/c (40%); Paper 2 (Document Questions): 1 question, 40 marks, prescribed topic (30%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Structured Essays) | 2 from A + 1 from B, each a/b/c | 40% | 2 h |
| Paper 2 (Document Questions) | 1 question, 40 marks, prescribed topic | 30% | 1 h 45 min |
IGCSE History drilling technique: 3 questions in 2 h is about 40 minutes each. Answer all three parts – (a) describe, (b) explain, (c) evaluate; in (c) state how far you agree and give reasons.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Structured Essays) | describe + explain + evaluate | Paper 1 answers stop at (a) description and (b) explanation, part (c) names no degree of agreement, and even pacing leaves the third question unfinished |
| Paper 2 (Document Questions) | cite sources + context | Paper 2 copies the source as the answer; provenance, date and limitations are never stated, so the inference marks disappear |
What is each IGCSE History 0470 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Structured Essays): describe + explain + evaluate; Paper 2 (Document Questions): cite sources + context
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks move topic to paper to whole paper: weeks 1-4 build timelines and causal chains by topic (WWI, Versailles, the Cold War), each with three named events and dates; weeks 5-7 drill Paper 1 only, two questions a week at a fixed 40 minutes each with parts a/b/c timed separately; weeks 8-10 drill Paper 2 documents in three-sentence units (what it says, on what basis, what limits it); the last fortnight is timed whole papers and the error log.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Structured Essays) | 2 h | about 40 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Document Questions) | 1 h 45 min | read the sources first |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE History 0470 paper?
Paper 1 (Structured Essays): about 40 min per question; Paper 2 (Document Questions): read the sources first
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| WWI causes | Only Sarajevo | Long-term: arms, alliances, nationalism | trigger != long-term |
| Versailles missing | Reparations only | Include war-guilt/disarmament/territory | Art 231 + reparations + disarmament |
| Cold War blocs | USSR as capitalist | USSR led the communist bloc | US=capitalist, USSR=communist |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: long-term versus trigger (kept apart or merged), dates and terms (treaty clauses, order of events), evaluation (does part (c) state a degree of agreement with reasons). Keep the second column as a table and recite it weekly; errors in the first are usually misread command words, so reread describe, explain and how far rather than relearning the content.
How many years should you drill?
The Paper 1 shapes are stable, so three sessions back is enough; Paper 2 follows your depth study, so check that a session actually examines the same topic before drilling it. Parts (a) and (b) from older years are usable as they are, but part (c) has been marked more tightly over time – mark it against recent criteria.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Parts (a) and (b) from older years are usable as they are, but part (c) has been marked more tightly over time – mark it against recent criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE History 0470 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE History 0470 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
How should the two hours be split across three Paper 1 questions?
A fixed 40 minutes each, with the last 20 for checking and finishing part (c). Start with the question you know best to set the rhythm, and do not over-write part (a) – it carries few marks and cannot buy back the evaluation marks lost in (c).
Is memorising dates useful?
Yes, but only alongside causation. A date on its own scores nothing in part (c); “because A, therefore B, so C” does. That is what the second column of the error log is for – read the table once a week.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor
After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.
Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
