IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 Drill Guide: Command Words, Functions, Comparisons
- 2026-11-04
The command word sets the answer
Paper 1 is the compulsory theory paper, running from multiple-choice to structured items, and marks gather in two places: whether every command word is answered at its proper depth, and whether the answer names a function rather than a brand. Naming the software earns nothing; saying what it does for the user earns the mark. In short answers, state, describe and explain each set a different depth; in comparisons, both sides need a sentence or half the marks go. For structured items: define, give one instance you have actually used, then say what problem it removes.
How is IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Theory): Multiple-choice, short answer and structured, all compulsory (40%); Paper 2 (practical test): Document production, databases and presentations: 70 marks (30%); Paper 3 (practical test): Spreadsheets and website authoring: 70 marks (30%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | Multiple-choice, short answer and structured, all compulsory | 40% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 2 (practical test) | Document production, databases and presentations: 70 marks | 30% | 2 h 15 min |
| Paper 3 (practical test) | Spreadsheets and website authoring: 70 marks | 30% | 2 h 15 min |
IGCSE ICT Paper 1 drilling technique: every question is compulsory and answers are written on the question paper; brand names of software or hardware earn no marks, so write functions and uses; the command word sets the depth (state one point, describe with detail, explain with reasons), and in compare questions write both sides.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | command words, definitions, comparisons | Explain items answered as a one-line state. |
| Paper 2 (practical test) | formatting, queries, master slides | Brand names given where functions were wanted. |
| Paper 3 (practical test) | functions, charts, HTML and CSS markup | Only one side of a comparison is answered. |
What is each IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Theory): command words, definitions, comparisons; Paper 2 (practical test): formatting, queries, master slides; Paper 3 (practical test): functions, charts, HTML and CSS markup
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: command words only, circling the key word and labelling each question as one point, several details or a reason, without writing full answers. Weeks 4-6: function writing, turning every software name in the notes into what it does for the user, one sentence each. Weeks 7-9: timed papers, logging actual time across the three item types and counting comparison items lost for answering one side only. Weeks 10-12: unseen years only, a three-word outline before every answer, then checking the mark points against the scheme.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Theory) | 1 h 30 min | 20 min multiple-choice, 40 min short answer, 30 min structured |
| Paper 2 (practical test) | 2 h 15 min | document production first, then database and presentation with screenshots |
| Paper 3 (practical test) | 2 h 15 min | spreadsheet formulas first, then HTML and CSS with screenshots |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 paper?
Paper 1 (Theory): 20 min multiple-choice, 40 min short answer, 30 min structured; Paper 2 (practical test): document production first, then database and presentation with screenshots; Paper 3 (practical test): spreadsheet formulas first, then HTML and CSS with screenshots
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naming brands | ‘Use a well-known package’ | Brand names earn no marks | State the function and use |
| Wrong depth for the command word | One line for ‘explain’ | Only ‘state’ marks | Give reasons and effects |
| One side only in a compare | Only LAN features | Half the comparison marks | Set both sides side by side |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the item and the item type (multiple-choice, short answer, structured, comparison); whether the loss came from answering below the command word, naming a brand, one-sided comparison, or the clock; the repair, naming the answer to rewrite as a function sentence or the missing side to add. Three losses of one kind takes the next week.
How many years should you drill?
Item shapes and command words have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers the multiple-choice, short answer and structured sections; software versions and syllabus wording change, so older papers are practice for technique, with scope checked against the current syllabus.
How many years of past papers is enough?
Item shapes and command words have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers the multiple-choice, short answer and structured sections; software versions and syllabus wording change, so older papers are practice for technique, with scope checked against the current syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE ICT 0417 Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Should multiple-choice be drilled separately?
Yes, in batches of twenty, checking whether each error is a knowledge gap or fast reading. Multiple-choice and short answer test the same concepts, so log them in the same skill column.
Should a function answer include an example?
One function sentence plus one concrete occasion is safest. Vague wording such as ‘makes data entry easy’ earns little; naming a real task shows both function and use.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor
After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.
Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
