IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 Drill Guide: Concepts, Examples, Argument
- 2026-11-04
Define the concept, then layer the answer
Paper 1 runs on concepts, research methods and social structure, moving from a one-line definition to a short discussion. Marks are layered: everyday meaning stalls low, a sociological definition lifts it, evidence from a study or example lifts it again, and an alternative explanation earns the top band. The usual loss is treating an example as an argument – an example shows the thing exists, an argument says why it supports your claim.
How is IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each (80 · 50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on research methods is compulsory and includes data response, then question 2 or 3 | 80 · 50% | 2 hours |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each | 80 · 50% | 1 h 45 min |
Paper 1 technique: 80 marks in 2 hours is about 55 minutes per question. In the question 1 data response, copy the figures out first and calculate: response rate = returns / sent x 100, ratio = larger / smaller, percentage change = difference / original x 100. Parts (d) and (e) need evaluation and counter-arguments using sociological concepts such as reliability, validity, socialisation and social mobility. In question 2 or 3 take the definitions and short parts first, then support the longer parts with examples.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | start with the compulsory research methods question | Definition items use everyday meaning instead of the sociological framing. |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | definitions and short parts first, essay parts last | An example is offered as the argument itself, with no link to the claim. |
What is each IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): start with the compulsory research methods question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): definitions and short parts first, essay parts last
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: five concepts a day, each with a sociological definition and one example. Weeks 4-6: research-method items, one sentence each for the method, its strength and its limit. Weeks 7-9: three timed papers, logging time and the layer left out. Weeks 10-12: unseen years only, forcing an alternative explanation into every discussion item.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 2 hours | about 55 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 1 h 45 min | about 50 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 paper?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): about 55 min per question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): about 50 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Response rate inverted | Writing 1200 / 960 | Response rate = returns / sent x 100 | 80% |
| Ratio confused with percentage points | Calling the 42% and 8% gap 5.25% | The multiple is 42 / 8 | 5.25 times |
| Percentage change over the new value | (0.50 – 0.42) / 0.50 | Use the original 0.42 as the denominator | 19.0% |
| Mean and median not distinguished | Reporting only 15.83 years | The median of the six values is 15.5 years | 15.5 years |
| Examples given where definitions are asked | Answering with a personal example | A definition needs precise meaning and features | socialisation = learning norms and values |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the item and the topic (family, education, crime, methods); whether the loss was an everyday definition, an example standing in for an argument, a one-sided answer, a mismatched term, or the clock; the repair, naming the layer to rewrite or the study to add. Three losses in one topic takes the next week.
How many years should you drill?
The paper arrangement and question shapes have held for years, so five to eight years covers concepts, methods and the topic spread; some topics have changed in scope and wording, so older papers are practice only.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Can an everyday meaning answer a definition item?
It can be written, but it earns no concept mark. A definition item wants the sociological framing plus an example that matches it.
Must a discussion include the opposite view?
Yes. A one-sided discussion stays at analysis; naming an alternative and saying why it is weaker earns the evaluation marks.
