IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 Drill Guide: Concepts, Examples, Theory
- 2026-11-04
Definition, example, theory: three layers
Paper 2 is built on structured extended answers, and marks go to the layers of argument rather than length. Each answer moves through three layers: define the key concept and mark its boundaries, ground it in a concrete social example, then attach a theoretical perspective to explain why the pattern appears. The usual losses are an example and a concept sitting in separate paragraphs with no link, or describing a phenomenon without naming the theory that explains it. After each layer, ask whether the sentence has moved you on or is circling.
How is IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each (80 · 50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on research methods is compulsory and includes data response, then question 2 or 3 | 80 · 50% | 2 hours |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each | 80 · 50% | 1 h 45 min |
Paper 2 technique: 80 marks in 1 h 45 min is about 50 minutes per question. Each question has six parts: do the definitions and description (a)(b) quickly, use concept plus example for the explanations (c)(d), give both sides and a conclusion in the discussion (e), and state a position before the evidence in the short essay (f). Always show the denominator in calculations: women’s share of domestic labour = their hours / total hours x 100, attainment gaps in percentage points, and crime rate = offences / population x 100,000.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | start with the compulsory research methods question | The example is given but never linked to the concept. |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | definitions and short parts first, essay parts last | The pattern is described with no theory named. |
What is each IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): start with the compulsory research methods question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): definitions and short parts first, essay parts last
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: definitions only, one sentence of definition plus one on what the concept covers and what it leaves out. Weeks 4-6: examples, three scenarios per concept with a linking sentence. Weeks 7-9: timed papers, a three-layer skeleton before writing, logging time per layer. Weeks 10-12: unseen years only, self-marking whether layers are clear, plus a one-page contrast of confusable concepts.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 2 hours | about 55 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 1 h 45 min | about 50 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 paper?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): about 55 min per question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): about 50 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic share over the man’s hours | 6 / 14 | The denominator is the 20-hour total | 70% |
| Gap reported as a percentage | Writing 28 points as 28% | Percentage points are not percentages | 28 percentage points |
| Crime rate without the 100,000 | 48,000 / 4,800,000 = 0.01 | Crime rate is per 100,000 people | 1000 per 100,000 |
| Dark figure treated as a total | Taking the 45 convictions as all offenders | The dark figure is the unrecorded difference | 330 – 45 = 285 |
| Discussion written one-sided | Only supportive points in part (e) | A discussion needs both sides and a conclusion | both sides plus a conclusion |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the item and the skill (definition, example, theory, comparison, evaluation); whether the loss was a loose definition, an unlinked example, a mismatched theory, or description without explanation; the repair, naming the layer to rewrite or the link to add. Three losses in one skill takes the next week.
How many years should you drill?
Question types and skills have been stable for years, so five to eight years covers definition, example, comparison and evaluation items; set studies and theoretical emphasis have been updated, so older papers are practice for structure only.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Sociology 0495 Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Can news events serve as examples?
Yes, if you argue their representativeness. A news example scores when you show which social relation or institutional pressure it reflects; otherwise it reads as a story.
Must a theory be named?
Naming it places your perspective instantly, so yes. But a sentence must follow on how that view reads this case; the name alone earns nothing.
