IGCSE Sociology 0495 Drilling Guide: Drill Order, 40-Mark Structures and a 12-Week Plan
- 2026-11-01
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · IGCSE SOCIOLOGY 0495
Built on the Cambridge 0495 syllabus (2025-2027 sessions): Paper 1 research methods, identity and inequality, 80 marks in 2 hours, question 1 compulsory with a data response, then question 2 or 3; Paper 2 family, education and crime, also 80 marks in 1 h 45, three questions and you answer two, each worth 50% of the qualification. Method only: the drill order across the two papers, how to layer a 40-mark answer, how to quote data in the data response, a 12-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is IGCSE Sociology 0495 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on res (80 · 50%); Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each (80 · 50%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 80 marks: two structured questions of 40 marks each; question 1 on research methods is compulsory and includes data response, then question 2 or 3 | 80 · 50% | 2 hours |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 80 marks: pick two questions out of three options, 40 marks each | 80 · 50% | 1 h 45 min |
Paper 1 technique: 80 marks in 2 hours is about 55 minutes per question. In the question 1 data response, copy the figures out first and calculate: response rate = returns / sent x 100, ratio = larger / smaller, percentage change = difference / original x 100. Parts (d) and (e) need evaluation and counter-arguments using sociological concepts such as reliability, validity, socialisation and social mobility. In question 2 or 3 take the definitions and short parts first, then support the longer parts with examples.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | start with the compulsory research methods question | The data response copies figures without saying what pattern they show; the compulsory research methods question eats 35 minutes in short parts, leaving 25 minutes for a 40-mark structure that ends in a rush |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | definitions and short parts first, essay parts last | The two of three in Paper 2 are chosen by how short the question looks, so one has no recallable study or case; definitions and short parts run long, and the 40-mark essay ends as three descriptive paragraphs with no judgement on which explanation is stronger |
What is each IGCSE Sociology 0495 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): start with the compulsory research methods question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): definitions and short parts first, essay parts last
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks run methods first, topics second, because Paper 1 question 1 is compulsory and examines methodology. Weeks 1-3 do that question only: two data responses a week, always writing the “what pattern” sentence before the “why” explanation. Weeks 4-6 take the 40-mark structures in Paper 1, two a week, four minutes spent listing how many points each part needs before writing, 55 minutes to write. Weeks 7-9 switch to Paper 2, taking family, education and crime in turn, one 40-mark question per topic with at least one named study or official statistic each. Weeks 10-11 sit one full paper a week (two hours for Paper 1, 1 h 45 for Paper 2) to practise choice and timing; week 12 is a two-paper simulation, with the remaining days on the weakest topic.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality) | 2 hours | about 55 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime) | 1 h 45 min | about 50 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each IGCSE Sociology 0495 paper?
Paper 1 (Research Methods, Identity and Inequality): about 55 min per question; Paper 2 (Family, Education and Crime): about 50 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Response rate inverted | Writing 1200 / 960 | Response rate = returns / sent x 100 | 80% |
| Ratio confused with percentage points | Calling the 42% and 8% gap 5.25% | The multiple is 42 / 8 | 5.25 times |
| Percentage change over the new value | (0.50 – 0.42) / 0.50 | Use the original 0.42 as the denominator | 19.0% |
| Mean and median not distinguished | Reporting only 15.83 years | The median of the six values is 15.5 years | 15.5 years |
| Examples given where definitions are asked | Answering with a personal example | A definition needs precise meaning and features | socialisation = learning norms and values |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: concept (is the definition accurate, or are neighbouring concepts mixed up), evidence (one named study, thinker or official statistic), layer (is there an evaluation, or only description), time (did the data response overrun 30 minutes). The second column is the one that gets skipped: students remember writing too little, while the real loss is three concepts and no evidence.
How many years should you drill?
0495 keeps two papers through the 2025-2027 sessions: Paper 1 and Paper 2 are 80 marks each, 50% each, two hours and 1 h 45 respectively, with no coursework. Question types have been stable for years, so five sessions cover them, but the studies and official statistics (crime rates, educational attainment gaps, changing family structures) move with the year: older questions are fine for structure, the figures must be current. The two papers do not overlap, Paper 1 being research methods, identity and inequality and Paper 2 family, education and crime, so drilling one alone leaves half the qualification untouched.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the IGCSE Sociology 0495 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the IGCSE Sociology 0495 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Paper 1 question 1 is compulsory. Can I start with question 2 or 3?
The order can change, but question 1 should not take more than 55 minutes. The data response needs the source read carefully, and attention is best at the start, so following the paper order is usually fastest; if the source makes no sense, warm up on a 40-mark structure first and come back, but keep 50 minutes for question 1. In two hours, any overrun leaves the last question ten minutes.
How much should a 40-mark structured answer contain?
Layers matter, not word count. Each question runs through parts (a) to (d) worth 4 to 15 marks: for 4-6 marks, two or three points with one sentence of explanation each; for 10 or more, a named study or case plus a closing evaluation of which explanation is stronger and why. Long answers that only describe score poorly; short answers with evidence on every point hold up.
