Primary 4 Chinese Drill Guide: Section Order and Answer Level
- 2026-11-04
Primary 4 Chinese: 小四看答案層次,唔係看題數
The Primary 4 Chinese paper drops to ten items, which looks easier and is not: the total stays at 100 marks, so each item is worth five to eight and a single answer at the wrong level costs more than a whole page did last year. The passages become complete narratives and the questions move to the six elements, character portrayal and paragraph function. With 45 minutes for ten items, slow writers still run short at the end, so the budget matters as much as the content.Ten items carry the same 100 marks at Primary 4, so the average item is worth ten. Three or four long answers exceed six marks, each requiring two or three points. The narrative passage runs to about 600 characters, twice the Primary 3 length, so reading must be held to half the time.
How is Primary 4 Chinese Practice Paper assessed, and what does each part carry?
Ten items, 45 minutes, 100 marks in total, split 30, 25 and 45 as before. With so few items each one is worth around ten marks, which is why a single answer at the wrong level costs more than an entire page did in the previous year.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A Reading 1 | One narrative passage with vocabulary and comprehension items | 30 | 11 min |
| Section B Reading 2 | A second passage with inference and paragraph-meaning items | 25 | 9 min |
| Section C Language Use | Punctuation, vocabulary, sentence patterns and rewriting | 45 | 22 min |
The table shows how this paper is built; it is not the official structure of any school or EDB paper. Primary 4, 45 minutes: 22 for the language-use section, 20 for the two passages, three for checks. Hold each item to four minutes; if a long answer is still shapeless halfway, move on and return.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Section A Reading 1 | Reading for detail and answering in full sentences | Answer level below what the question asks |
| Section B Reading 2 | Inference and paragraph meaning | Skipped items |
| Section C Language Use | Language accuracy and rewriting | Wrong word pairing or punctuation |
What is each Primary 4 Chinese Practice Paper paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Section A asks for the six narrative elements and how a character is portrayed. Section B tests paragraph function rather than paragraph content. Section C carries the rewriting and integration items, the only place where two points must be combined into one answer.
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
Ten items in 45 minutes looks generous until slow writing takes the last two. Close the language-use section first, then the two passages, holding each item to four minutes and moving on when it overruns. For narrative items, list the six elements and then develop two in detail; even effort scores lower.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: one long answer a day, checked against the mark scheme for level. Weeks 4-6: narrative elements and portrayal, three examples per passage. Weeks 7-9: the paper in 45 minutes, logging minutes per item. Weeks 10-12: only the answers that fell short, rewritten one level higher.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Section A Reading 1 | 11 min | about 11 minutes |
| Section B Reading 2 | 9 min | about 9 minutes |
| Section C Language Use | 22 min | about 22 minutes |
How should the time be split inside each Primary 4 Chinese Practice Paper paper?
Primary 4, 45 minutes: 22 for the language-use section, 20 for the two passages, three for checks. Hold each item to four minutes; if a long answer is still shapeless halfway, move on and return.
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-sentence long answers | Three required points, one written | a six-mark item earns two | match the number of points to the marks |
| Missing an element | A narrative without time or result | content marks lost | list the elements before writing |
| Function answered as content | Describing what a paragraph says when its job is asked | no marks | state what it does for the whole text |
| Out of time | The last answer left half finished | all long-answer marks lost | four minutes an item, then move on |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: item type, cause (level too low, off the question, out of time), and a model answer one level above the pupil own.
How many years should you drill?
There are no public past papers at Primary 4; school papers are the working material. The Territory-wide System Assessment samples give question types only, not a difficulty standard.
How many years of past papers is enough?
Ten items is too few to judge from a single paper, so keep two school papers in rotation and redo each after a fortnight. Watch the minute each long answer actually took rather than the mark, because time is where this level loses most.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the Primary 4 Chinese Practice Paper drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the Primary 4 Chinese Practice Paper mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Fewer items means an easier paper, right?
No. The total mark is unchanged, so each item carries more weight and the margin for error is smaller.
