Primary 5 Chinese Drill Guide: Section Order and Answer Level

Primary 5 Chinese Drill Guide: Section Order and Answer Level

  • 2026-11-04

Primary 5 Chinese: 小五練審題:問原因與問效果是兩種答案

Primary 5 Chinese adds expository and argumentative passages to the narrative mix, and the language-use section starts testing connectives and paragraph rewriting. Ten items in 50 minutes means four to five minutes each, which is enough only if the pupil reads the instruction word first. The most expensive confusion is between why the writer did something and what effect it has, since the two demand different answers and pupils routinely write one for the other. This is the year before the internal assessment, so accuracy of direction beats volume of practice.Ten items in fifty minutes at Primary 5, with one or two expository and narrative passages. Method items require both the method name and its function; missing either loses the mark. The language-use section supplies a paragraph with three or four blanks for connectives, testing relations between clauses rather than feel.

How is Primary 5 Chinese Practice Paper assessed, and what does each part carry?

Ten items in 50 minutes, sections of 30, 25 and 45 marks. Four to five minutes an item is the budget, and the language-use section now includes connectives and paragraph rewriting rather than isolated sentence work.

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Section A Reading 1 One narrative passage with vocabulary and comprehension items 30 12 min
Section B Reading 2 A second passage with inference and paragraph-meaning items 25 10 min
Section C Language Use Punctuation, vocabulary, sentence patterns and rewriting 45 25 min

The table shows how this paper is built; it is not the official structure of any school or EDB paper. Primary 5, 50 minutes: four to five minutes an item, no long answer beyond seven. Reading the instruction slowly and writing quickly is the only budget that works at this level.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Section A Reading 1 Reading for detail and answering in full sentences Answer level below what the question asks
Section B Reading 2 Inference and paragraph meaning Skipped items
Section C Language Use Language accuracy and rewriting Wrong word pairing or punctuation

What is each Primary 5 Chinese Practice Paper paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Section A requires the method name and its function together, not the name alone. Section B tests instruction-word reading, separating why the writer did something from what effect it has. Section C adds connectives and paragraph rewriting, where the logic between clauses decides the mark.

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

The order at Primary 5 is instruction word, method, connective. Three weeks circling each instruction word and writing one line on what it asks, then expository passages with method and function, then four weeks of timed papers plus error rework. Read the instruction slowly and write quickly.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: instruction words only, circling each and writing one line on what it asks. Weeks 4-6: expository passages, identifying method and function. Weeks 7-9: the paper timed at four to five minutes an item. Weeks 10-12: errors plus connective drills.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Section A Reading 1 12 min about 12 minutes
Section B Reading 2 10 min about 10 minutes
Section C Language Use 25 min about 25 minutes

How should the time be split inside each Primary 5 Chinese Practice Paper paper?

Primary 5, 50 minutes: four to five minutes an item, no long answer beyond seven. Reading the instruction slowly and writing quickly is the only budget that works at this level.

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Wrong direction Answering the effect when the cause is asked the item scores nothing circle the instruction word first
Method mismatched Calling an example a comparison method marks lost fix one function sentence per method
Connectives wrong Contrast used for cause language marks lost work out the relation between clauses first
Vague answers Writing “very important” with nothing behind it one mark only give one concrete example per point
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: item type, cause (wrong direction, vague answer, connective error), and the corrected answer with the difference stated.

08

How many years should you drill?

There are no public past papers at Primary 5; school papers are the working material. The Territory-wide System Assessment samples give question types only, not a difficulty standard.

How many years of past papers is enough?

Rotate two or three school papers through the year, each revisited once after two weeks. At Primary 5 the second attempt should be timed, since the first untimed run only establishes which instruction words are misread.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the Primary 5 Chinese Practice Paper drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the Primary 5 Chinese Practice Paper mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Should we buy extra papers before the internal assessment?
No. The school paper already follows the assessed format; understanding every error in it beats starting new papers.
