Primary 6 Chinese Drill Guide: Section Order and Answer Level

Primary 6 Chinese Drill Guide: Section Order and Answer Level

  • 2026-11-04

Primary 6 Chinese: 跨篇比較:先表格化,再落筆

Primary 6 Chinese asks pupils to compare two passages: where their views agree, where they differ, and which expression works better. No single-passage reading prepares for this, so the drill is to build a two-column table of views before writing a single word. The language-use section moves into passage rewriting and integration, which is harder than isolated grammar. Ten items in 50 minutes also means the comparison item must be reached with at least fifteen minutes left, or it is answered in fragments.Ten items at Primary 6, built on two related passages, with comparison taking about thirty per cent of the reading marks. Section C asks for passage rewriting that keeps the meaning while shifting the angle of narration. The secondary interview tests something different; this guide covers the written paper only.

How is Primary 6 Chinese Practice Paper assessed, and what does each part carry?

Ten items in 50 minutes, the same 30, 25 and 45 split, but the reading section pairs two related passages and asks for comparison. The comparison item alone is worth roughly thirty per cent of the reading marks and needs twenty-five minutes reserved for it.

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Section A Reading 1 One narrative passage with vocabulary and comprehension items 30 12 min
Section B Reading 2 A second passage with inference and paragraph-meaning items 25 10 min
Section C Language Use Punctuation, vocabulary, sentence patterns and rewriting 45 25 min

The table shows how this paper is built; it is not the official structure of any school or EDB paper. Primary 6, 50 minutes: reserve 25 for the comparison item, four minutes for everything else, and keep three to confirm both sides were answered.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Section A Reading 1 Reading for detail and answering in full sentences Answer level below what the question asks
Section B Reading 2 Inference and paragraph meaning Skipped items
Section C Language Use Language accuracy and rewriting Wrong word pairing or punctuation

What is each Primary 6 Chinese Practice Paper paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Section A builds a comparison between two passages: where they agree, where they differ, and which expression works better. Section B tests integration across both sources. Section C asks for rewriting that changes the angle of narration while keeping the original meaning intact.

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

At Primary 6 begin with the comparison: tabulate the two passages views in two columns, then write the both-agree-but pattern. Two weeks of tables, two of comparison sentences, four of timed papers, two of rewriting errors. A comparison answered on one side earns half marks.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: paired passages, table only, no answers. Weeks 4-6: comparison answers written in the both-agree-but pattern. Weeks 7-9: the paper timed, reserving 25 minutes for Section C. Weeks 10-12: errors only, rewriting each comparison in full structure.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Section A Reading 1 12 min about 12 minutes
Section B Reading 2 10 min about 10 minutes
Section C Language Use 25 min about 25 minutes

How should the time be split inside each Primary 6 Chinese Practice Paper paper?

Primary 6, 50 minutes: reserve 25 for the comparison item, four minutes for everything else, and keep three to confirm both sides were answered.

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
One side only Comparing by describing only the first text half marks at most answer both sides every time
No comparison structure Two paragraphs with no contrast structure marks lost use the both-agree-but pattern
Integration missed Drawing on one source where two are given content marks lost tabulate both sources before writing
Out of time Reaching the comparison item last only a few lines written reserve twenty-five minutes for it
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: item type, cause (one side only, no comparison structure, missed point), and the rewritten comparison sentence.

08

How many years should you drill?

There are no public past papers at Primary 6; school papers are the working material. The Territory-wide System Assessment samples give question types only, not a difficulty standard.

How many years of past papers is enough?

Work from two school papers in the final year, plus the TSA sample for question types. The comparison item should be redone from a blank page, because rewriting it from memory is the only way to check the structure actually stuck.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the Primary 6 Chinese Practice Paper drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the Primary 6 Chinese Practice Paper mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Does the secondary interview need Chinese drilling?
The interview tests spoken response, the paper tests written comprehension. Prepare them separately.
