Section B — Reading Comprehension (40 marks)
Last week our school had a Book Fair in the hall. Every class visited the fair with their English teacher. Pupils could buy books, and every pupil who read a book at home wrote the title of the book on a card.
On Friday the teachers counted the cards. Class 1A read 24 books. Class 1B read 18 books. Class 2A read 30 books. Class 2B read 20 books. The table below shows the number of books each class read.
Class 2A read the most books. Class 1B read the fewest. Miss Ho, the English panel head, said, “This is not a competition. The important thing is that you enjoy reading.”
The pupils in 2A will visit the public library next month. Miss Ho will go with them.
| Class | 1A | 1B | 2A | 2B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Books read | 24 | 18 | 30 | 20 |

Section C — Writing (30 marks)
Write about 40 words about your favourite day at school. Write five sentences. Say which day it is, what you do on that day and why you like it.
| Item | marks |
|---|---|
| Content — the day, what happens, why you like it | 12 |
| Language — present tense, spelling, word order | 12 |
| Organisation — five sentences in a clear order | 6 |
My favourite day at school is Friday. On Friday we have PE and music. In PE we play basketball with Class 2B. After lunch we sing songs in the music room. I like Friday because I can play with my friends and we have no homework.
Marking notes for tutors
- Five sentences are required — fewer than four sentences scores at most 8 of 12 for organisation.
- Watch the third person -s — a pupil who writes “he play” loses Language marks; write the corrected word above the error, not over it.
- Do not accept a list of subjects — the task asks what the pupil does on that day; “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday” alone scores 0 for content.
