Section B — Reading Comprehension (40 marks)
Last term our school started a garden behind the school hall. Every class has two small beds. The pupils plant seeds in September and water the plants every morning before the first lesson.
In December the tomatoes were ready. Each class picked the tomatoes from its own beds and wrote the number on a card. Class 2A picked 36 tomatoes. Class 2B picked 28 tomatoes. Class 2C picked 41 tomatoes. Class 2D picked 35 tomatoes. The table below shows the number each class picked.
Class 2C picked the most tomatoes and Class 2B picked the fewest. Miss Wong, the science teacher, said, “The number is not the important thing. You looked after the plants every day, and that is what made them grow.”
All the tomatoes were given to the school canteen. Next term the classes will plant beans in the same beds.
| Class | 2A | 2B | 2C | 2D |

Section C — Writing (30 marks)
Write about 40 words about a day in your school garden. Write five sentences. Say what you did, what you saw and how you felt.
| Item | marks |
|---|---|
| Content — what you did, what you saw, how you felt | 12 |
| Language — past tense, spelling, word order | 12 |
| Organisation — five sentences in a clear order | 6 |
Last Friday my class went to the school garden. I planted six bean seeds in our bed. Then I watered the tomatoes with a green can. I saw a big butterfly on a yellow flower. I felt happy because our garden looked beautiful.
Marking notes for tutors
- Five sentences are required — fewer than four sentences scores at most 8 of 12 for organisation.
- Past tense — a pupil who writes “I go to the garden and plant seeds” loses Language marks; write the corrected verb above the error.
- No copied table — a pupil who only lists the numbers from the table scores at most 6 of 12 for content; the task asks about the pupil’s own day.
