Sports Day

Sports Day was held on 15th October at Shing Mun Valley Sports Ground. All pupils took part in at least one event.

The four houses are Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. Every house got points for every event. Blue House got 45 points. Green House got 38 points. Red House got 52 points. Yellow House got 41 points. Red House won the cup.

“We practised every Tuesday after school,” said Peter, the Red House captain. “On the day of the races it rained, so we ran on a wet track. That made the races harder, but we did not give up.”

The principal said that the most important thing was not the cup. It was the way pupils helped one another when they fell down. Next year Sports Day will be held in November, when the weather is cooler.

Points won by each house
House Blue Green Red Yellow
Points 45 38 52 41

# Question Answer and marking notes
1 Peter says the team practised every Tuesday. Why is practice important before a competition? Model: Practice is important because the team can learn to start quickly and to run together. On a wet track the Red House pupils already knew what to do, so they did not panic. Practice also helps a team work together. (Reason 3 marks, explanation 3 marks.)

Section C — Writing (30 marks)

Write about 50 words for your school magazine about your Sports Day. Say which house won, use two figures from the table, and say what you enjoyed most.

Item marks
Content — the winning house, two correct figures, what you enjoyed 12
Language — past simple, spelling, range of vocabulary 12
Organisation — title, clear order, linking words 6
Our Sports Day

Our Sports Day was on 15th October. Red House won the cup with 52 points, and Green House got 38 points. I ran in the 60 m race and I came third. I enjoyed the relay most, because everyone in my class shouted for our team. It was a long day but we were very happy.

Marking notes for tutors

  • Both figures must be correct — a pupil who copies the wrong column loses one content mark; check the two numbers against the table before awarding 12.
  • A title is part of organisation — an article without a title cannot score the top band for organisation (6 marks).
  • Past tense throughout — a pupil who writes the report in the present tense loses at most 3 Language marks.
