What this paper covers
Two passages are used. The first follows a boy whose school bus leaves at 7:30 and reaches school at 7:55, so the ride lasts 25 minutes; of his 32 classmates, 18 bring a water bottle and 14 do not, a difference of four. The second passage visits a neighbourhood park open from 8 am to 4 pm, with three bins emptied every two hours, twelve trees and four benches seating three children each. The knowledge part asks how many hours a day has, how many days a week has, the freezing point of water, which organ we breathe with, the colour that means stop, the 999 emergency number, a healthier snack, how often to brush teeth and how to dry hands. The last part asks a child to write about crossing a road, cutting waste, escaping a fire and drinking enough water. A sample question reads: the park opens at 8 am and closes at 4 pm, so how many hours is it open? The working is 16 minus 8, giving eight hours, with one mark for the subtraction and one for the unit. Two further marks are given for explaining that putting the bottle in the brown bin keeps plastic out of the landfill. Pupils often leave out the unit, write a bare number or answer in one word, so the marking notes ask for a full sentence in the final four questions. Parents should mark beside each question rather than at the end of the page, so a child can see which skills to revisit before a class test. The paper suits a parent reading each passage aloud first, then letting the child answer alone; answers should be checked against the brown bin, the 999 number and the bus timetable facts.
