Part A: Reading comprehension (40 marks)

Transport in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a small city with a lot of people, so we have many kinds of transport.
The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) runs underground. Road traffic cannot block it, so it is fast and punctual.
Buses run on the roads. You can see the streets from a bus, but a bus is late when there is a traffic jam.
Trams run only on Hong Kong Island. The fare is cheap and the ride is slow, so many tourists like to take a tram.
The Star Ferry leaves from the pier and carries people and bicycles across the harbour.
Mum says, “Take the MTR when you are in a hurry, and take a bus when you want to see the view.”

1. Answer the questions about the passage.

# Question Answer and marking notes
1 Why is the MTR fast and punctual? (8 marks) Because it runs underground and road traffic cannot block it.
2 What makes a bus late? (8 marks) A traffic jam.
3 Which kind of transport runs only on Hong Kong Island? (8 marks) The tram.
4 Besides people, what can the Star Ferry carry? (8 marks) Bicycles. (No marks for “goods”.)
5 According to Mum, which transport should you take to see the view? (8 marks) A bus.

6. Answer the questions about Figure 2.

# Question Answer and marking notes
6 How much waste paper did the three estates collect in one week? (8 marks) 120 + 90 + 150 = 360 kg. (5 marks for the working, 3 for the answer.)
7 Which estate collected the most, and by how much did it beat the lowest? (8 marks) Wo Che Estate; 150 – 90 = 60 kg. (3 marks for the estate, 3 for the working, 2 for the answer.)
8 What is the average amount collected by each estate? (7 marks) 360 / 3 = 120 kg. (4 marks for the working, 3 for the answer.)
9 If every 10 kg of waste paper makes 7 notebooks, how many notebooks can this batch make? (7 marks) 360 / 10 = 36 groups; 36 x 7 = 252 notebooks. (4 marks for the working, 3 for the answer.)

Part C: Recycling and safety (30 marks)

10. Answer the following questions.

# Question Answer and marking notes
10 Write two kinds of waste that can be recycled. (8 marks) Any two: waste paper, aluminium cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, old clothes. (4 marks each.)
11 Why should plastic bags not go into the same bin as food waste? (8 marks) Plastic bags do not break down, they get in the way of food-waste recycling and they contaminate the compost; they can be recycled separately. (6 marks for “they do not break down”, 2 more for saying they must be sorted out.)
12 Why must you hold the handrail on a bus? (7 marks) Because a bus may stop suddenly or turn a corner, and you could fall and get hurt.
13 Write one way to save electricity at home. (7 marks) Any one: switch off lights when you leave a room, turn off unused appliances, use a fan instead of the air conditioner, or set the air conditioner to a higher temperature.
