What this paper covers
The first passage describes a school recycling day: 24 classes collect 15 kg of waste paper each, 360 kg in total, and every 5 kg becomes 4 kg of new paper, so the haul yields 288 kg; a classroom 8 m long and 6 m wide has a 28 m perimeter and a 48 square metre floor. The second follows a boy taking his grandmother to a clinic open 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm, eight hours a day, twenty minutes per patient, so at most 24 patients, with three doses a day for five days making fifteen doses. Knowledge items cover the 1 July holiday, thermometers, what plants need to make food, Victoria Harbour, why water on live electrical fires is dangerous, when shadows are shortest, solar power, the base of the food pyramid, the three Rs and the Hong Kong Observatory. A sample question reads: twenty four classes gather fifteen kilograms each, so what is the total? The working is 24 multiplied by 15, giving 360 kilograms, and the next part divides by five then multiplies by four to reach 288 kilograms of new paper. In the clinic passage pupils must convert 1 pm to 13:00 before subtracting and must not count the lunch hour; the key shows both the conversion and the arithmetic. Frequent errors are multiplying where division is needed, treating the six teachers as pupils, and writing money answers without a dollar sign. Award method marks even when the final figure is wrong. The recycling arithmetic suits a shopping receipt: bags of paper weighed, kilograms converted; check the clinic times against a real opening-hours sign and the dose count against a medicine box.
