Primary 3 General Studies practice paper: a passage on where Hong Kong water comes from, a household water-use chart, and water-cycle and climate questions, 13 questions in 50 minutes for 100 marks, with worked answers and marking notes.
Part A: Reading comprehension (40 marks)
Turn on the tap and clean water flows out, but that water is not easy to get.
Rainwater in Hong Kong is collected in reservoirs. When it rains, water from the hills runs along catchwater channels into the reservoirs, which then send it to treatment works.
The treatment works screen out mud and bacteria, add chlorine to disinfect the water, and then send it to our homes.
Our reservoirs are not enough, so Hong Kong also buys water from Guangdong Province, which is piped here from the East River.
Dad says, “Every drop takes electricity and resources to treat, so we must not waste it.”
1. Answer the questions about the passage.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Where does water from the hills go when it rains? (8 marks) | Into the reservoirs. |
| 2 | What two things do the treatment works screen out? (8 marks) | Mud and bacteria. (4 marks each.) |
| 3 | What is added to disinfect the water? (8 marks) | Chlorine. |
| 4 | Where does Hong Kong buy water when its reservoirs are not enough? (8 marks) | From Guangdong Province, piped from the East River. |
| 5 | Why must we not waste drinking water? (8 marks) | Because every drop needs electricity and resources to be collected, filtered and disinfected. (6 marks, plus 2 marks for showing that we should treasure it.) |
Part B: Chart analysis (30 marks)
Figure 3: Daily water use of one household (litres, sample data)
6. Answer the questions about Figure 3.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | How much water does this household use each day? (8 marks) | 40 + 25 + 15 + 20 = 100 litres. (5 marks for the working, 3 for the answer.) |
| 7 | Which use takes the most water, and what fraction of the daily total is it? (8 marks) | Showering, 40 litres, which is 40/100, about two fifths. (3 marks for the use, 2 for the litres, 3 for the fraction.) |
| 8 | How much more water does showering use than laundry? (7 marks) | 40 – 25 = 15 litres. (4 marks for the working, 3 for the answer.) |
| 9 | If a family of four each uses the same amount, how much does the family use in one day, and in one week? (7 marks) | 100 x 4 = 400 litres a day; 400 x 7 = 2800 litres a week. (3 marks for the day, 4 for the week.) |
Part C: Science and climate (30 marks)
10. Answer the following questions.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Name two processes in the water cycle. (8 marks) | Any two: evaporation, condensation, precipitation (rain), run-off. (4 marks each.) |
| 11 | Why can water on the hills flow down to the reservoirs? (8 marks) | Because gravity pulls water from higher ground to lower ground, so rainwater runs down streams and catchwater channels. (6 marks for “it flows from high to low”.) |
| 12 | Why should we drink more water in hot weather? (7 marks) | Because sweating takes water out of the body, and drinking water replaces it and helps prevent heat stroke. |
| 13 | Write one habit that saves water at home. (7 marks) | Any one: take a shower instead of a bath, turn off the tap while brushing teeth, use water from washing vegetables to water plants, or run the washing machine only when full. |
