Primary 4 General Studies paper 2: hand washing, estate waste sorting, why ice floats, and a pictogram on waste paper, 10 questions in 45 minutes for 100 marks, with answers, marking notes and printable question and answer PDFs.
Part A: Health and daily life (25 marks)
When colds are going round, our teacher reminds us to wash our hands properly. Wetting your hands is not enough. You must use soap and rub your fingers, the gaps between them and your wrists for at least 20 seconds.
Why so long? Soap first dissolves the oil on your hands, then the water carries away the foam with the germs on it. That takes time. If you rub twice and rinse, the germs stay on your hands.
I kept a small record at home: I wash my hands about 8 times a day – before meals, after using the toilet and when I get home. At 20 seconds each time, that is 160 seconds, or 2 minutes 40 seconds.
A small thing adds up in one day.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Besides the fingers, which parts must you rub? (8 marks) | The gaps between the fingers (4 marks) and the wrists (4 marks). No marks for fingers only. |
| 2 | Why does the writer say rubbing twice and rinsing does not work? (8 marks) | Soap must first dissolve the oil and the water then carries away the foam with the germs (5 marks); if you rub too fast, the germs stay on your hands (3 marks). |
| 3 | How many seconds a day does the writer spend rubbing? Give the answer in minutes and seconds. (9 marks) | 20 x 8 = 160 seconds (5 marks); 160 seconds = 2 minutes 40 seconds (4 marks). Deduct 3 marks if there is no working. |
Part B: Community and rules (25 marks)
Last month our estate put three new bins in the refuse room: blue for paper, yellow for metal and brown for food waste. The management office said that in the past all rubbish went into one bin, and now it must be sorted.
The cleaner told me our block has 40 households. Each household throws away about 2 bags a day and a bag weighs about 3 kg, so our block produces 240 kg of rubbish a day.
She said that once paper and metal are taken out, less rubbish goes to the landfill, and the paper can be made into new paper and the metal into new cans.
She also warned that if rice and leftovers are mixed in, the whole bag of paper cannot be recycled, so the sorting must be clean.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | How many bags of rubbish does the block throw away each day? (6 marks) How heavy are they in total? (6 marks) | Bags: 40 x 2 = 80 bags (6 marks); weight: 80 x 3 = 240 kg (6 marks). Deduct 2 marks per part without working. |
| 5 | Give two benefits of sorting paper and metal out of the rubbish. (13 marks) | Less rubbish goes to the landfill (6 marks); paper can be made into new paper and metal into new cans, so the materials are used again (7 marks). No marks above 3 for saying “it is greener” without explanation. |
Part C: Basic science (25 marks)
When you put an ice cube in water, it floats, and a small part of it stays above the surface.
Our teacher says water expands by about 9 per cent when it freezes, so ice is lighter than the same volume of water and floats.
She did an experiment: she poured 250 mL of water into a measuring cup and put it in the freezer. The ice took up about 22.5 mL more, making 272.5 mL, but the mass did not change at all.
That is why a glass bottle filled to the top may crack in the freezer.
For the same reason icebergs float in the sea, and only a small part of them shows above the water.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | What happens to the volume of water when it freezes? (8 marks) | It expands by about 9 per cent (4 marks), so ice is lighter than the same volume of water and floats (4 marks). |
| 7 | What volume does 250 mL of water become when it freezes? Show your working. (8 marks) | 250 x 9% = 22.5 mL (4 marks); 250 + 22.5 = 272.5 mL (4 marks). |
| 8 | Why may a glass bottle filled with water crack in the freezer? (9 marks) | The water expands by about 9 per cent when it freezes (4 marks) but the bottle keeps the same capacity, so the ice pushes the glass outwards (3 marks); glass cannot stretch, so it cracks (2 marks). |
Part D: Pictogram (25 marks)
Figure 1: Waste paper collected by four classes in one week (kg, sample data)
Study Figure 1 and answer the questions.
| # | Question | Answer and marking notes |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | How many kilograms of waste paper did the four classes collect altogether? (12 marks) | 30 + 45 + 25 + 40 = 140 kg. (6 marks for the working, 6 for the answer.) |
| 10 | How many kilograms more did the top class collect than the lowest class? (13 marks) | Top: 4B with 45 kg; lowest: 4C with 25 kg (6 marks); 45 – 25 = 20 kg (7 marks). |
