Primary 5 Mathematics · First Term Test Practice Paper

Section A (16%, 2% each)

Q Answer Working / marking note
1 368 36 × 4 = 144; 512 − 144
2 9996 98 × 100 + 98 × 2 = 9800 + 196
3 45 4 × 25 = 100 first; 36 × 125 ÷ 100 = 4500 ÷ 100
4 6 1320 7.6 − 2.75 + 1.8 = 6.65; or L.C.M. 20 throughout
5 49 L.C.M. 36: 27 − 21 + 10 = 16, then 16/36 = 4/9
6 2 718 148/18 − 105/18 = 43/18
7 1 5960 L.C.M. 60: 24 + 45 + 50 = 119/60
8 5 124 6 − 3 7/12 = 2 5/12; 2 10/24 + 2 15/24 = 4 25/24

Award the mark only if the answer is in its simplest form. An unsimplified answer (e.g. 16/36 in Q5) scores 0 for that item.

Section B (20%, 2% each)

Q Answer Note
1 0 604 738 — the ten-thousands digit is 0; accept only 0
2 34 Divide the top and the bottom by 14
3 24 3 ÷ 1/8 = 24
4 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45 All six needed; a missing or an extra factor scores 0
5 6 18 = 2 × 3², 24 = 2³ × 3
6 712, 34, 56 L.C.M. 12: 7/12, 9/12, 10/12
7 x = 38 4 2/9 = 38/9
8 85 302 Largest digits first, but the units digit must be even (0 or 2)
9 NE The reverse direction of SW
10 rhombus Accept / rhombus. Not «square» — a square has right angles
Original questions by TutorZone. Paper format modelled on a Hong Kong primary school’s first-term mathematics test paper; this is not that school’s examination paper.

Section C (30%)

Q Answer Working / marking note
1(a) S (south) · 2% Facing east, a right turn is 90° clockwise → south
1(b) N (north) · 1% The minute hand points at 12; with 3 o’clock pointing east, 12 points north
2(a) 8 · 1% 2 diagonals + 2 mid-lines cut the square into 8 identical triangles
2(b) 38 · 2% 3 shaded out of 8; must be simplified
3 Any two different parallelograms with base × height = 16 cm² 4% = two correct figures with the base and the height labelled; 2% = only one correct; 0 = the same shape drawn twice
4 Perimeter 30 cm (2%) · Area 45 cm² (2%) (9 + 6) × 2 ; 9 × 5. Using the slant side (6 cm) as the height in the area part scores 0
5 36 cm² · 3% The figure has 8 square-edges exposed: 48 ÷ 8 = 6 cm; then 6 × 6
6 80 cm² · 3% Large 15 × 6 = 90; small 5 × 2 = 10; 90 − 10
7 64 cm² · 3% 40 + 40 − 16 (the overlap is 4 cm × 4 cm). Adding the overlap instead of subtracting it scores 0
8 Two triangles of different shapes, each ½ × base × height = 12 4% = two correct triangles with the base and the height shown; 2% = one correct; the same shape twice = 0
9 Perimeter 42 cm (1%) · Area 84 cm² (2%) 13 + 14 + 15 ; 14 × 12 ÷ 2

Section D (10%, 2% each)

Q Answer Note
1 90 books 40 + 50
2(a)(b) Thursday; 65 books Both parts are needed for the 2%
3 245 books 25 + 40 + 35 + 65 + 50 + 30
4 Wednesday and Thursday +30 books; the next largest rise is +15
5 Any sensible reason e.g. the library closes earlier on Saturday / fewer pupils come to school on Saturday

Section E (24%, 4% each)

Q Answer Working / marking note
1 Length 30 cm; area 540 cm² 96 ÷ 2 − 18 = 30 ; 30 × 18
2 243 cm² Base = 9 × 3 = 27 ; 27 × 9
3 $1740 145 × 4 = 580 cm of lace ; 580 × $3
4 $212 Chicken $96 ÷ 3 = $32 ; 96 × 2 + 32 × 3 = 288 ; 500 − 288
5 4 112 hours 4 1/4 + 2 2/3 = 6 11/12 ; 6 11/12 − 2 5/6 = 4 1/12
6 74 78 kg Sister 38 3/4 − 2 5/8 = 36 1/8 ; 38 3/4 + 36 1/8 = 74 7/8

Section E marking: 1% for a correct statement/equation, 1% for the correct substitution, 1% for the correct numerical value, 1% for the correct unit. A correct answer with no working scores at most 2%, because the section instruction asks for statements and working steps.

Four places where marks are most often lost in this paper

Trap What the pupil writes What should happen
Section A Q5 — the L.C.M. is 36, not 24 Uses 24 → 18 − 14 + 6 = 10/24 12 and 18 share 36; 16/36 must be simplified to 4/9
Section C Q4 — the slant side used as the height (9 + 6) × 2 = 30 for the area Area uses the perpendicular height: 9 × 5 = 45 cm²
Section C Q7 — the overlap double-counted or ignored 40 + 40 = 80, or 40 + 40 + 16 Subtract the overlap once: 40 + 40 − 16 = 64 cm²
Section E Q1 — the halving of the perimeter left out 96 − 18 = 78 for the length 96 ÷ 2 = 48 ; 48 − 18 = 30 cm for the length

How to use this paper

① 45 minutes, no calculator, one sitting — Sections A and B about 13 minutes, Section C 15 minutes, Section D 5 minutes, Section E 12 minutes.
② Mark with the notes above; record «statement missing» and «unit missing» separately from «wrong answer».
③ Items lost in Sections A or B are concept gaps — redo three similar items before moving on. Items lost only in Section E are presentation gaps — practise writing the statement line first.
④ Redo the whole paper after seven days; the target is 90% or above on the second attempt.

Four most common losses

  • Using the slant side instead of the height for a trapezium or parallelogram.
  • Not simplifying a fraction quotient, or forgetting to invert before multiplying.
  • Mixing up circumference and area formulas (P5 covers circle properties only).
  • Leaving the unit out, or not writing the answer as a mixed number.
