Primary 1 Maths: Addition and Subtraction within 20 and 100 — Practice Paper 2 (10 Questions)

Paper 2 follows the lesson plan: make-ten once each for adding and subtracting, one column carry and one column borrow, then a three-number sum, change from $80, and “what plus 28 gives 65”. Item 10 redoes the expensive slip of forgetting to reduce the tens.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 03 are make-ten adding and subtracting within 20, items 04 to 06 are two-digit column carry and borrow, items 07 to 09 are a three-number sum, change and a missing number, and item 10 redoes the borrow slip.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 17 9 needs 1 to reach 10, so take 1 from the 8: 9 + 1 = 10, and 10 + 7 = 17.
2 6 Take 4 off 14 to reach 10, then take the other 4: 10 − 4 = 6.
3 13 7 needs 3 to reach 10, and 6 is 3 + 3: 10 + 3 = 13.
4 85 Ones: 6 + 9 = 15, write 5 and carry 1. Tens: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8, so 85.
5 28 Ones: 3 cannot take 5, so borrow 1: 13 − 5 = 8. Tens: 6 − 4 = 2, so 28.
6 83 Ones: 7 + 6 = 13, write 3 and carry 1. Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8, so 83.
7 59 19 + 24 = 43 and adding 16 gives 59; grouping 24 + 16 = 40 first also gives 59, because order does not change a sum.
8 $33 80 − 47 = 33, and 33 + 47 = 80 checks it; after paying, the money left must be smaller.
9 37 Work backwards with subtraction: 65 − 28 = 37, then check 37 + 28 = 65.
10 34 Ones: 2 cannot take 8, so borrow to make 12 − 8 = 4. Tens: 9 loses 1 and becomes 8, 8 − 5 = 3, so the answer is 34, not 44.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
