Primary 5 Maths: Properties of Circles — Practice Paper 3 (10 Questions)

Paper 3 moves beyond conversion: ring width of concentric circles, axes through the centre, whether a circle fits a card, and recovering a radius from three distances. No pi.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 04 cover conversion and how radius and diameter grow, items 05 and 06 cover ring width and axes of symmetry, items 07 and 08 are a fit test and a reasoning item, item 09 is a clock face, item 10 is the usual multiply-instead-of-halve slip.

  2. FoundationA circle has diameter 26 cm. What is its radius?
  3. FoundationCompasses are opened 4.5 cm to draw a circle. What is its diameter?
  4. FoundationThe radius of a circle grows by 1 cm. By how much does the diameter grow?
  5. IntermediateTwo circles share a centre: inner radius 3 cm, outer radius 7 cm. How far is it along a radius from the inner circle to the outer one?
  6. IntermediateDoes every axis of symmetry of a circle pass through its centre, and why?
  7. IntermediateA card is 10 cm by 6 cm. Can a circle of radius 4 cm be cut from it? What about radius 3 cm?
  8. ChallengePoints A and B are each 5 cm from a centre, point C is 5.5 cm from it. Which two lie on one circle, and what is its radius?
  9. ChallengeA round clock face has diameter 30 cm. How long is a hand reaching from the centre to the rim?
  10. Error redoA circle has diameter 12 cm. What is its radius? (common slip: answering 24 cm by multiplying)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 24 cm A diameter is two radii end to end: 12 × 2 = 24 cm, with the unit.
2 13 cm A radius is half the diameter: 26 ÷ 2 = 13 cm, and 13 × 2 = 26 checks it.
3 9 cm The opening runs from the centre to the circle, so it is the radius: 4.5 × 2 = 9 cm.
4 2 cm The diameter is always twice the radius, so 1 cm on the radius adds 1 cm on each side: 2 cm in total.
5 4 cm Both distances start at the same centre, so subtract them: 7 − 3 = 4 cm.
6 Yes, all of them pass through the centre Only a line through the centre folds the two arcs onto each other; any other line leaves one side larger.
7 Radius 4 cm no, its 8 cm diameter exceeds the 6 cm width; radius 3 cm yes, its 6 cm diameter just fits the width The diameter must fit both sides: 8 cm is wider than 6 cm, so it cannot; 6 cm equals the width and just fits.
8 A and B; radius 5 cm Points on one circle are equally far from the centre, and only 5 and 5 match: A and B share a 5 cm circle, C lies outside it.
9 15 cm Centre to rim is the radius: 30 ÷ 2 = 15 cm; a hand never spans the whole diameter.
10 6 cm A radius is always shorter than its diameter: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 cm, and 6 × 2 = 12 checks it. 24 cm reverses the operation.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
