Primary 5 Maths: Division of Fractions — Practice Paper 1

Paper 1 starts from the rule that dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal, then moves to fractions divided by fractions and to word problems about cutting ribbon and pouring juice, with every answer checked by fraction arithmetic.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 03 divide whole numbers and fractions by unit fractions; items 04 to 06 divide a fraction by a fraction and cut a ribbon; items 07 to 09 handle a mixed number, cancel before multiplying, and pour juice into cups; item 10 redos multiplying where the pupil should have divided.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 2 Dividing by 1/4 is multiplying by 4: 1/2 x 4 = 2.
2 6 3/4 x 8 = 24/4 = 6.
3 25 Each whole has five fifths, so five wholes hold 25 of them.
4 3/2 (that is 1 1/2) 2/3 x 9/4 = 18/12, which simplifies to 3/2.
5 21/10 (that is 2 1/10) 3/5 x 7/2 = 21/10, already in its lowest terms.
6 6 pieces 4/5 divided by 2/15 is 4/5 x 15/2 = 6.
7 2 Change 1 1/2 to 3/2, then multiply by 4/3 to get 12/6 = 2.
8 3/2 (that is 1.5) In 7/8 x 12/7 the two 7s cancel, leaving 12/8 = 3/2.
9 4 cups 3/4 divided by 3/16 is 3/4 x 16/3 = 4.
10 The pupil multiplied instead of dividing; the answer is 2/3 x 5/4 = 5/6 Dividing by 4/5 means multiplying by 5/4, which gives 10/12 = 5/6.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
